I base them in western France and they don’t seem to have the range. Is there something to be done or is it simply impossible to get fighter cover for invasion?

You need to reasearch to increase the range of your fighters.

You have to research your fighter speed up to at least 2 (they start at 1) or they'll never be able to get to the UK.

Yes. Historically German fighters took part in the BOB but not very effectually because of the range factor. Actually adding range (fuel tanks) may have been in their interest, if done in a timely manner.

I've found range 1 fighters to be all but useless. If you have any intention of using fighters (as any nation) I'd advice on getting them to range 2.

They're somewhat useless offensively if you have a rapidly advancing front line, like in the early stages of a Russian invasion. They're not useless defensively for guarding coastal sea zones or infrastructure.

I believe the earliest you can get to range 2 is the end of Winter '41. BoB starts in Spring '41 in this game if you want to include fighters.
