Torpedoes

I have a question about torpedoes vs. naval attack values. After reading some threads on this forum it appears that torpedoes do not take into account armor values? If that's true, it would seem that they are more effective than the air to ship attack value. So as Japan, why would you research anything else?

Also, while I understand the naval combat procedures (i.e., range and number of attacking vessels) I would assume that air groups attacking ships will always use the torpedo attack value? Or will the air unit use both naval attack and torpedo attack values (in other words, attack twice).

Thanks.

They attack twice first with bombs then with torpedoes.

OK, thanks. That's one question answered.

If you don't research Evasion your planes will be resting on the bottom of the ocean with their accurate and deadly torpedos still attached :)

Good point. But would you research ship attack with CAGs?

Not sure if I would have the resources as Japan, and I would definitely want to improve defense before offense. I'd rather have an ineffectual force that survives to be maybe improved later, that a force of elite killers that gets shot down on their first mission.

Torpedoes are better to research than Bombs if you have to pick between the two. But once you get to 5 with Japan, any more is overkill. At that point if you want to improve their effectiveness at killing ships, develop Bombs.

Remember that it takes two hits to kill a ship (or doubling their defense outright). So, if you can put one hit on with the bombs, the torps finish the job rather than having the bombs miss and the torps simply damaging them.

But yes, CAG Evasions is the most important stat IMO. Without that, you never get to drop your bombs OR torps. By the time Japan goes to war with the WAllies, you MUST have researched CAG Evasion up by one. Otherwise using CAGs is a waste of time and resources. If your opponent researches BB AA up a notch and you cant follow suit in Evasion (likely true because you are exceeding World Standard), discontinue relying on Carriers to win the naval war. Your planes will just be slaughtered to little gain.
