Fortress: combat bonus?

The manual suggests that fortresses do not just require 3:1 to take, but also convey a combat bonus.
Is there a defensive bonus (and if so, what kind of bonus)?
Thanks in advance,
von Schmidt

Do you mean like this boost to the evasion?
+1 Unit in Defending Force in a region that is fortified (Gibraltar is an example of
this) and the attack is a General Attack

I find I've started doing a lot of digging through the manual while I play my second try at this game.
Means I'm down to a few turns a night instead of the play-a-whole-game in a night that I keep hearing about

, but you find some interesting things buried in there.
For instance, that one-liner comes from the page-long list of changes to Evasion in combat that's in the Land Combat section.

Silly me, I looked in the section describing fortresses.
I could really do with another thorough read of the manual after several weeks of playing. As you indicate, the small things buried in a sentence can make quite a bit of difference.
Now if only the index was more extensive and actually showed the correct page numbers...
