OKay, everyone. Here's your chance. What WW2 era tank MUST we put in Band of Heroes? I don't care if it was in Normandy or not. I must, however, be German or American.
Sound off! Here's your chance to contrbute a counter.
Best,
Mark

I'll put in a vote for the M26/T26 Pershing, though it really has nothing to do with a 1944 game, but it's cool. [8D]

A hero Tank,
Michel Wittman's Tiger Tank '007'.
Could even design scenarios around this tank.

Just because I'm stuck in the 1920's thanks to War Plan Orange, how about the French Renault FT-17s captured by the Germans, and used as artillery tractors and scout vehicles.
Or, to be just as crazy, the US Heavy Tank M6. Nothing cooler than a 76mm Gun and a coax 37mm.

It depends upon whether the designer wants accuracy and authenticity.
There were no Tiger, Panther or Pz IV tanks on the Contentain Peninsula at D-Day
Wittman was killed near Villers Bocage some 40k away. And some 6 weeks after D-Day
On the Contentain Peninsula, the Germans had some captured light French tanks they were using for training and keeping the French population in check. The 101st faced some of these.
After the capture of Carentan they faced larger vehicles such as Stugs.

Sherman Firefly (had a Brit 17 pounder mounted sideways to fit). Brits and Canadians used them but I think the Yanks wangled a few too.

StuPz IV
This was one of the more specialized German AFV and only 306 vehicles of this type were manufactured during the war.
From the beginning of the war German infantry regiments had a infantry gun company to provide fire support. There were two types of infantry guns, the 7,5 cm le.IG and the 15 cm s.IG. The larger of these was difficult to handle in the terrain and this problem was of course even more serious for the infantry units among the panzer divisions. To remedy this problem the Germans introduced a succession of lightly armoured vehicles carrying the 15 cm s.IG. These were built on the chassis of the Pz.Kpf.Wg. I, Pz.Kpf.Wg. II and the Pz.Kpf.Wg. 38 (t). The thin armour and open top made it impossible to use these vehicles in close quarters or expose them to enemy AT guns.
The Stu.Pz. IV was a departure from this line of vehicles. It was built on the Pz.Kpf.Wg. IV chassis and the armour was thick.
During the battle at Kursk in July 1943 the vehicle mad its combat debut, when the216. Stu.Pz.Abt. fouht with 9. Armee. The only unit equipped with the StuPz IV in Normandy was the 217. Stu.Pz.Abt. It employed between 16 and 28 Stu.Pz. IV.
The main advantage the model enjoyed was of course the large high explosive shell that was very effective against infantry targets. On the other hand, the very low muzzle velocity made it almost useless against enemy tanks.

Technically not a tank, although mounted on a tank chassis: M7 Priest.

Two tanks which primary role was to support infantry AFAIK :
German : Panzer IV-E, with the short 75L/24 gun. Because I like the shape ! [:)]
US : M4A3E8 Sherman, Easy Eight. Because of the cool nickname [:)]
But these are obvious choices already in the game I guess. [;)]

Leopard 2 A6 [:D]
now honestly. A STUG-IIIg although not historical would be great.

This is a tough one, and I keep checking this thread and thinking about it. I would tend to agree with Marc about the Stug, and maybe add any version of Marder series SP gun. I am hoping for an infantry centered game, so anything super heavy isn't of as much interest to me.
Also any captured French tanks would be nice-like a Pzkampfwagen 35S 739(f)...

Yeah, but he was only a hero because he was fighting Brits. The Americans would have cleaned his clock. [;)]
Right, Joe... you may not have had time to read the first post. I said any tank. I already have the actual tanks --which were VERY few for the Germans StuG IIIg, PZ IIIJ, Marder I, PzKpfw 35-S... Americans... M4A1, M4105, M-10, M5A1, Jeep. I'm just thinking of adding something for fun. For example, a Tiger I and and Easy Eight so I can throw in a Kelly's Heroes scenario. Just for giggles.
Yeah, I have thought of adding a Priest M7, but I don't think they were used much in direct support. The Leopard is a cool thought, but if I was going to do that, I think I'd put in a MadCat, which would truly be interesting.
Best,
Mark
