Crash at tutorial

I just re-installed my old RFTS cd and applied the new 1.4 patch. I haven't played the game for a few years so I was going to do the tutorial. When I opted for the tutorial I got this message: Reading past the end of file ".\Data\Standard.dat". RFTS will now exit. Then I see my desktop. Any solutions to this?

I'm not sure what this indicates, but SSG may have an idea. If you haven't already, please try reinstalling both the full game and the patch, making sure all background programs (particularly anti-virus) are off. Also, can you confirm for me that a full install from the same CD without the patch does not have this error? In general, we are not supporting the 2000 release version (just the new v1.4 download release), but if the problem is in any way with the update installation, we will fix it up as soon as possible.

Regards,

- Erik

Just re-installed 2000 version of RFTS and applied patch - anti virus etc., all other programs closed - same error message comes up whenever I start any type of game - tutorial, scenario, random, etc. Resinstalled without the patch and this error does not appear.

Any ideas?

I did what Kipper did with the same results. Then I went to the SSG site and downloaded their 1.2 beta patch. I did a clean install of RFTS and then applied the 1.2 patch and the game worked fine, no CTD. Then I put the 1.4 patch on and it still seems to be working fine. Unfortunately the Tutorial seemed to have disappeared when I applied the 1.2 patch. It still does not seem quite right. Will the 1.4 bug fixes and enhancements be intact if I have the 1.2 patch on there also? Thanks for your help. KWB

I'll check in with SSG tonight (their morning) and see what the problem might be here. Thanks for the reports.

same here with the same message. Happens when I try random map and any of the save games. Got my old disk and applied the patch. Actually there seems to be no way to get in at all. [8|]

I was running through the tutorial (I just purchased the game) and it crashes at the point where it is teaching you how fight with your ships. I can't get past that point on the tutorial, it CTD without fail.

I don't know if it will crash when just playing a game, I haven't tried that yet.

sabre1,

Try this:

Change the file names of the following files in the /Campaign folder:

"Reach For The Stars Campaign.cam" - Becomes "1. Reach For The Stars Campaign.cam"
"Episode 2 Enter the Klaa'Keen.cam" - Becomes "2. Enter the Klaa'Keen.cam"

Then start a new campaign/tutorial and let me know if that helps.

We should have a fix and an updated download posted later today, but this is the current work-around.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik,

That appears to have solved the problem so far. I haven't started a game yet. Thanks for the quick response.

Ok I started a new game and got three turns into the Reach for the Stars campaign. It crashed after 4 turns back to the desktop. I will try a scenario and see what happens.

Thanks for your help.

Out of curiousity is anyone having this problem with the digital download, or just with
a patched version using the old CD?

I got through about 40 turns before having to stop for other duties on a random map
game. I will try loading it here in a bit and see how that goes.
