Noob Starting Points

Hello folks.
I bought the game yesterday. I've been very impressed by the forums, after action reports etc. that I've seen here. I would also like to thank the developers of the game. I've played the board game WaW for many years and have always dreamed of playing it online. Since my best friend and toughest competitor now lives in Russia to be able to play it PBEM is a great bonus that I never imagined. Thanks.[&o]
My question...
What are the biggest errors a new player can make in the game (besides not reading the manual)? Have you lost games because of minor details you overlooked? Can you tell me the 'classic' noob errors so that I ca avoid them.[:-]
Also, could you tell me generally at what point you felt you were 'getting it'? What things did you do that improved your games the most?
Please don't feel as if you are giving up any confidential information. It will be a long time before I am even a mediocre player at this game.
Thanks for reading and any comments that you leave.[:'(]
