Yes, it happens all the time on turn 1 if you block the North Sea and take the Netherlands (fleet moves to Scotland). I think it cannot move past a narrows however. It may need a port to move to, not sure about that.

I always move in my infantry to the Netherlands first. This flushes out the light fleet to the North Sea where you can take it out with bombers and subs.

Me too. Never let a fleet get away if you can prevent it.

A fleet cannot retreat past narrows, it's true. For example, you capture Leningrad and have a fleet (even just transports I think) in the 2 Baltic Sea spaces, then those Russian ships are destroyed. Otherwise they pop out into the Baltic and annoy you until you kill them :P
I think the other port must be in movement range too...
I soften up that light fleet with a bomber, then send my Hvy Fleet after it! Bwaa-hahaha! After combat I move the Hvy to north of Denmark to protect the transports invading Norway. It costs 5 supply to move there anyways...

I've taken to blocking the seas with subs before invading. if you block the north sea with one sub and then the scotish sea with the other, you will destroy that light fleet.

the op-fire from the carrier off of scotland I think has only hurt me once out of a dozen times. the nice thing then is to bring the sub around to the port in western france. you then will have to subs in the atlantic instead of one.

slight risk, but worth it IMO.

[X(] Oooo! Gonna try that one :)
You're right actually, as afraid as we all seem to be of Opp Fire, it should only be a 1 in 6 chance. However, then our Sub has been shot at, and the Transport (should we attack one) will have a 50/50 chance to sink it...

thats true, but I've given up with attacking on that first turn with that sub anyway. its the one that comes out of west germany, not the one in the middle of the atlantic. so first turn that sub wouldn't have attacked a transport anyway. top it off with the bloodless destruction of a light fleet and its probably done enough that turn anyway.
