Widescreen Aspect Ratio

Well you've now got two people with the widescreen setup. I own a dell 2005fpw as of a few days ago and its a beautiful thing... however 1280x800 nor any other resolution seems to work in SS. Even manual editing of the video.cfg file to include 1280x800 or 1680x1050 which is the Dell's native res, doesn't seem to work.

Not sure why I can of course scale it, but then it seems stretched so I usually just opt for the 1280x1024 and live with black lines on either side... however it would be unendingly sweet if we could get the wide aspect ratio to work properly.

Technically speaking its 16:10 1680x1050 and for most laptops its 1280x800, neither of which exist as choices in the drop down menu for the vid settings.

Thanks again, and I'm still loving SS.

I have a widescreen laptop (Dell XPS) and 1280x800 works like a charm for me....

It's odd that it doesnt even show up for you...what version of SS are you running?

Curious. 1280x800 works for me and I don't even have an actual widescreen monitor. Starshatter does not support the higher res widescreen 1680x1050 mode.

Smaggler, please do me a favor. Edit the video.cfg file to include these lines:

VIDEO

width: 1280
height: 800
depth: 32

Then, I need you to run the game with a -d3d5 command-line switch. This will increase the amount of DirectX diagnostic crud in the error log. You can do this by editing the windows shortcut to the game, or by opening a command shell (aka dos box) and running the game manually. Use the following command line to run the game:

stars -nosplash -d3d5

As soon as the game launches and gets to the main menu, press Alt+F4 to exit. Then send me the errlog.txt file by email (milo@starshatter.com) or post it to this thread.

By the way, in the mean time, you could also launch the game using "stars -win" to run it in a resizable desktop window. You should then be able to stretch it or maximize it to whatever size you want.

Thanks,

Out of curiosity, what's your computer setup, Smaggler? ATI, nVidia or integrated graphics?

All right I think I see the problem, apparently the card doesn't want to accept a 1280x800 res. Not sure why, it does in other games...

At any rate attached is the error log.

Its not that I can't play it or view it, its that it always looks stretched and out of proprotion on the full 1680x1050, I can play just fine at 1280x1024 but then I have the equivalent of a 4:3 17" monitor. I was hoping the 'stretched' version of 1280x800 would be less distorted since its a widescreen res to begin with...

=)

Thanks Smaggler. Apparently your NVIDIA 6600 GT doesn't do 1280 x 800 (at least not for Direct 3D). If you can set your desktop to 1280 x 800 - which you may not be able to do - you can just run the game in a window and maximize it. If you normally run your desktop at 1600 x 900, you could still try to run Starshatter in a desktop window to avoid the stretching, but I'm concerned that the in-game fonts will be too darn small to read.

Sorry about that.

Ah well, here's to hoping in some release in the future you can squeeze in 1680x1050 resolution!
