I've been playing wargames since 1973, and I can't figure out how to play this game. The tutorials don't help! I can't even figure out how to select the 3.505th Battalion HQ to start Tutorial #1.
Is anybody playing this game? [:(]

Hi Champagne,
Welcome to the forum. I started wargaming in 1970 so we must be the same vintage. [;)]
To select the 3.305th Bn HQ just click on it's icon.

Its icon should then highlight in yellow as displayed in the above screen dump. Once you have selected a unit click on the desired order tool ( or use the keyboard shortcut ) - eg Defend = D. The cursor will change according to the order type. Then just click the objective - ie the location on the map where you want them to defend/attack etc.

You then should see the Task icon with a line linking it to the unit, as indicated in the above screen dump. The box around this indicates the area around the objective the force will occupy. You can change this by adjusting the settings on the Task Data display on the Side Bar. The manual does explain what each of these do.
Sometimes you may need to zoom the map in to find a unit. Just scroll the wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out or use the Alt key and click on the map. You can also use the arrow keys ( left for previous, right for next, down for first subUnit, Up for superior ) to navigate from one unit to the next. As it does so it will select the unit.
It's getting late here so I'm going to bed now. But please get back to us if you still have problems and I'll look in on you in the morning. Good luck.[:)]

I will have to bow my head to those who started playing games in the early 70s, my baptism of fire was the the early 80s and I am still learning or should I say forgetting things.
zoom in to make each unit easier to select when they are bunched together. along with the methods that Arjuna suggested, I still use the + and - buttons below the map in the top left of the game screen.
stick with the tutorials, it takes a little time but follow each step carefully and you will learn the game play mechanisms while picking up some tactical tips as well.

Im useless at wargames though I love them and found the tutorials quite good. SO good in fact that when it came to playing a scenario with no tutorial I was lost and then never played the game again!!
Thats not to say its not a great game it is. I just cant get continous time.

Interesting. I'd been playing RTS games (Sudden Strike, Earth 2150) before playing Airborne Assault and found the whole game system very easy to get to grips with. It was when I went to try hex-based turn-based games that I found myself 'all at sea'[:D]
Persist with the game and it will come to you in the end[:)]

Blast it. I figured out why I couldn't move the American pieces . . . I failed to select the Allied Forces when prompted! The default is the German, so the game was launched with me as the German.
Thanks for the help.

Champagne,
[:D]
That's a beauty. I was just talking to Adam "Skirmish" Bryant ( our interface programmer ) about famous goofs we've made. He's just spent 12 hours trying to get some graphs working only to realise that he'd forgoten to resize the frame first. But it comes in a poor second to me spending two whole days of debugging before I realised that I had left a "not" out of a for loop. Now that was embarrassing. [:)]
Now that your set, all the best.
