Controller Quandry

It's been something of a goal for me to get a PS2 style gamepad configured for SS:
The left stick horizonal axis controls roll and vertical will increase throttle when pushed up and decrease when pulled back and the right stick would control pitch and yaw. The rest I'm unsure about, perhaps the d-pad could control horizonal and vertical translation thrusters?
Regardless, I've yet to accomplish it. For a long time this was due to my Logitech dualshock (or whatever they call it) being dead and me not having the time to get a new pad/fight with the config utility. Now I'm home from college for the summer and will have much more free time (even though I'll be working 8-4ish) and I picked up a new pad today (A Nyko AirFlo). Unfortunately it doesn't have the profiling software of the Logitech one (I'll check shortly whether I can use the profiler anyway) and SS doesn't seem to read the joystick axis at all. When I go to configure the joystick axis SS doesn't seem to detect the gamepad (even though windows does and it seems to respond fine when I check it out in the 'game controllers' panel).
Any suggestions?
