Text Resolution & Windowed Mode

Just two quick questions from a newbie - I check the box in the game preferences screen to play in windowed mode, but the game loads up in full screen mode every time. How, exactly, do I apply the change to windowed mode?
Also, I am playing this game on a laptop, and noticed that while the text in the opening Game Menu Screen (where it says "Play World at War") is extremely sharp, and the icons for tanks, planes, etc. on the world map are sharp, the text on the world map, along with the text in the pop-up boxes and for the counters (along with the counter graphics) are a little fuzzy. They're readable, but it would be great if that text could be as sharp as the Game Menu Screen text. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.
