Alot of times, especially with aircraft, units that are reported as damaged in a battle seem to disappear and are no longer available to me. Where did they go?

Also, the manual says units will attempt to find repair automatically. Is that the case or should I be managing the repair of my damaged units?

A damaged unit will be returned to a factory and placed in the build que as if it were half complete. You do not need to do anything.
