Strange error in ver 2.0

I recently tried version 3.2, but decided I liked the previous version that I was using ( v2.0). I had left it on my machine, but in a different directory when I installed v3.2. When I started up v2.0, it started fine and all the commands seem to work. However, when I saved the game and then went back to the saved game I got an error message that appeared to be a game error mesage. Immediately after selecting the letter of the saved game I got the message

(-21536) fixed symbol data - Akagi CLASS

If I hit a key I get the same message except with Akagi replace with another class. If I continue hitting a key until I have cycled through all classes, the game proceeds normally ( the DELAY DISPLAY selection box comes up). However, when I look in any port all the ships have carrier symbols.

I have tried deleting and re-installing with the same results.

Does anybody have any idea what gives.

Thanks,

Gene Smith

I've seen this, too, albeit within the same version (v3.2). It happened when I accidentially opened a PBEM saved game started with the official release with another PW-install I'm using for my mod. I don't know exactly what was going on, but it looks like the 'symbol data files' i.e. the files that hold the ship icons for the different classes (the CVx.sym files in the PacWar directory) and the corresponding slots for the ships in the obc file were out of sync (i.e. the program could not locate the proper icons for the different ships). The obc files of v2.0, v3.2 and my mod are all different, a few ships are in different slots and some ship classes have been added and others deleted (in my mod I've added LSTs [;)]. Those differences might 'confuse' the program when you continue a saved game on a different install, causing strange things to happen.

So my guess is that you have started a game under v3.2 and copied the save files to continue under v2.0?

All version from 2.0 onwards have an "update function" that is supposed to replace the ship and aircraft icons from previous games to the ones that the active version of the game is using. It looks like this function is corrupted somehow by the presence of Version 3.2. My advice -- and I freely conceed I'm not an expert -- is to copy the save game files to a disk, then erase both versions of Pacific War from your computer. Then, re-install Version 2.0. (Incidentally, there is a version 2.3 out there, and IMHO it's the best version released so far.)

Thanks for the reply.

Any idea where I can get v 2.3. The download here at Matrix only has v3.2

I'll check my files when back from work, maybe I've kept it.

I've found the Version 2.3 ".zip" file, but it's pretty big: over 6.5 MegaBytes. If you're interested, I'll try to trim it down by dumping the "update.pdf" (which contains only about 15 KB of text) and the older editor. Do you have software that can handle 7-Zip compression?

Checked my files - have only kept the original and v3.0 through 3.2. Sorry, it's up to the Capt'n.

I would sure like to get a copy if you could, either here are send to

I don't know what 7-zip compression is. I just un-zip with whatever is handy. I do have broadband, so I am not concerned about the size, unless it is a problem for you.
