Special Japanese Ship Conversion rule

From page 182 of the ebook manual:
"The Chitose and Chiyoda may undergo a major conversion from a CS to a CVL. The Ise and Hyuga may undergo a major conversion to add a large contingent of floatplanes (it remains a BB type ship).

These conversions occur if the ship is in anchor in Osaka after December 31, 1942. At that time the ship enters the reinforcement pipeline..."

My question is: Is this a hardcoded rule, or can I have other ships upgrade to different classes? For example, could I have an AS convert into an AV, or an AV into a CVL? Is this slot dependent?

Thanks again.

I believe they are all slot dependent. I don't know why the other two CS ships aren't allowed to convert. Just because they were sunk before the other two doesn't mean they couldn't have been converted to CVL as well.

Hi
slot dependent. Hardcoded to upgrade slot to new class.

From previous trials, conversion seems to happen if said ships are in Osaka at beginning of the month from 1943.

Thanks guys.

I'm just going to have to force a house rule in my scenario - you can use the original ship, or the ship it should be able to convert into, but not both.

Can you not just make the ship(s) upgrade to a different class? I know that there MSWs in the CHS which upgrade to PCs for example. Perhaps the air group issue makes this difficult though, hmm.

I think that's how the game does it. You don't end up with two ships. either a CS or a CVL. If you convert the CS to a CVL, it takes 6 months (and shipyard points)

The player doesn't really have many choices. Just whether to convert or not.

Really? I didn't know that was possible beyond this rule. I'll test it in the editor - but I would have to figure out something about the airgroups if it works.

Of course, it might be a bit odd to see an AS "instantly" turn into a CVL.. and then there's the airgroups issue. Hmm..

Have suggested many times that the USN BB modernizations (Nevada, Pennsylvania, California and Colorado classes) be made a "conversion" such as the Japanese CVL and the special auxilliary coversions rather than simple refits with the system damage penalty being the only time constraint. Given the historical length of these conversions, and the unpredictable nature of the conversions due to the damage potentially sustained at Pearl Harbor, having the ability to "convert" these modernizations would be more appropriate than the current refit.

Ah.

Of course doing it the "standard" way will mean the ship is back in action quickly since only 15 sys damage will be applied at maximum. Still, I don't see any other way.

Agreed, it doesn't look like there's any other option. I'll set up the airgroups to appear on the conversion date; that's the best I can do, I think.

No biggie, will just require some attention from the players and of course mentioning in a readme/manual. [:)]
