Had to chuckle to myself, while digging for unrelated stuff in the bsmt I uncovered my dusty old Axis&Allies board game...sigh! I could never get most of my friends to indulge me.

After opening it up and looking at the map and the cardboard placeholders I have to say ... Dam GG's WaW is a good game !!

I have a new use for plastic pieces now, decorations by my monitor to keep the illusion real. Many thanks to all the hard work put in to this game.

Oh, and don't get me started on the "MB Fortress America" game ... remember those satilite towers .... buzzzzzzzzzt ... buzzzzzzzt ... buzzzzzzzt, hmm, 3 more Eastern Coalition units destroyed . yahoo!

LOL, you are speaking my language and giving away your age;) I loved and still play Axis & Allies on occasion and I LOVED playing Fortress America and Shogun.

I still play Axis & Allies, but I know only 1 person with the patience and knowledge to play [:@] We play A&A Europe in addition to the revised A&A edition with new board and rules...probably get in 2 or 3 games a year. We never got shogun or fortress america but did buy the xenos games world at war expansion for A&A - much fun, started out in '39 with a an absolutely huge map.

Some of the best after hours gaming I did at SSI were Fortress America games. That game was great multiplayer fun and you always knew the game would end one way or the other within x number of turns (was it something like 6-8?) because of those lasers.

i used to play A&A once a month . made my own 4foot by 3foot board and had two set of the revised game. now the sit in the closet. but i think the could add alot to world at war, add some of the asspects of P.T.O. - i used to play that game for hours[:'(][:)]

Axis & Allies will always be a great beer and pretzels game. I managed to play several 6 and a few 7 player games of Diplomacy, that was an awesome game with no dice and no chance involved. PTO eh? Are you talking about WW2:PTO I had that game but for whatever reason I remeber it had some flaws which me and my friends never really got past. We all loved Pacific theater more than European but ETO was a far better game IMHO. see below.

I think it was made by SPI but it has been a long time and I do not have it anymore. I spent literally thousands of hours playing that game with friends, and we kept several AAR's of that game as well. I have sworn before and I will do so now, If I ever win a lottery I WILL have that game made into a computer game exactly as it was. It was so freakin brilliant and loads of fun.

the advent of computer wargames was a godsent for me. way back when I couldn't get any of my friends to play any of the usual games more than once or twice. to keep their interest, we'd have to create fake scenarios. I remember one such scenario being with AH squad leader to put all the maps together and use all the pieces at once!

now with computers I can always find someone who share my passions for these games (as they truely should be played).

Double blind Axis and Allies is the way to go. Being the referee is almost as fun as playing a side.

I have 2 of this game, one of which the counters haven't even been punched yet, and both the "Expanded and Updated Limited Edition Wargame." Obviously I loved a lot of things about this game. BUT I had a big problem with the rules being so poorly written that we spent more time arguing about the rules than playing. It's been a long time since I dug it out but I do remember that the interception rules in particular were always good for a heated debate. I also seem to recall that the US entered the War in 42 with no units ar all. Even wrote to SPI to get some answers, but never got a reply before the company folded.

Lurking somewhere in parents' basement is an Axis&Allies pre-MB version. It was done like a low budget AH bookcase game. The map was a big poster without any backing. I recall paper "production" monopoly-style money. I remember being aghast that MB got their hands on A&A, but I loved Fortress America. Ahhh...the pre-computer days....I haven't bought a board wargame for probably 10-odd years.

The computer made sure that the family dog and cat could no longer eat my game counters. I was now safe as long as the rascals didn't chew the powercord or pee on the CPU![;)] I no longer had to clear Third Reich, etc off the dining room table for Mom's parties. When Steel Panthers came out, there was no turning back.

<sigh> I spent many a good hour playing F-A....

For me, the ultimate game was SPI's War in Europe. 9 map sections covering a huge area. I had the fortune of having a friend with a spare room. 3 of us played that game for 10-15 hours a week for almost 6 months.

GDW's Drang Nach Osten/Unentschieden (I apologize for my almost certain mispell of the German) was also a great game but you had to have a ton of intestinal fortitude to setup an play as the Soviets. As I recall, there were several thousand counters that had to be put into precise locations. This generally took two people about 10-12 hours.

Almost all of GDW's Europa series were great games. GDW also made a weird space-strategy game called "Imperium" that was kind of neat.....something like that would make a great computer game.

For me, the ultimate game was SPI's War in Europe. 9 map sections covering a huge area. I had the fortune of having a friend with a spare room. 3 of us played that game for 10-15 hours a week for almost 6 months.

The map for that one (WIE) overlapped an entire Ping Pong table !!!. There was a computer version of WIE that was available for awhile but the programming author started taking liberties changing the original design and giving in to so many programming changes that it was no longer like the original board game. However, on that particular subject and monster scale, Schwerpunkt games is getting ready to release it's version of War in the West, to be followed up with a full scale War In Europe. They already have a War in Russia game that will be getting a remake.

A friend and I also used to play a lot of War in Europe, but we never had the room to leave it up for a long time. We did play a few scenarios and played War in the East to the end a couple times. It was a great game, but time (and space) consuming. I think I still have it in the closet somewhere. Several years ago I bought unused copies of GDWs Scorched Earth and Fire in the East at a garage sale, but have never played them. They are just sitting in my closet along with my old copies of Western Desert and Torch (which I have played). I guess some day I'll have to check on E-Bay to see what I can get for them.

I am a bit of a pack rat and I still have copies of some of these games. Axis and Allies was redone, so I bought the new one just for old times sake. Not sure where my fortress America is, but I am pretty sure that I can come up with an unpunched ETO. Unpunched PTO as well.

This is a great game. I hope the TCP/IP comes out soon so we can bang this out real time. Who needs sleep, anyway?
