PBEM for newbie

I just bought FPG. No real experience in wargaming other than HTTR (and not especially good at that either).
What do people recommend for a newbie when starting FPG - is it better to play the tutorials a few times playing around with settings and then try some of the scenarios or, can a newbie with a patient opponent learn better through PBEM?
