I'm sure that this has been asked before but I'll ask again anyway! Couldn't find the answer in 'search'. I have aircraft on board Japanese carriers that are attached to Home defense force i.e. a restricted command. Do I need to change this before I use them offensively? For instance if the carrier they are on is sunk will they fly to the nearest friendly base or will the restricted command features kick in?
If I want to change their command, why can I not assign them to 'independent' like all the other carrier aircraft? What is the best command to change to if 'independent' is not available?

They are fine belonging to any command ... the only place you will have a problem is if you offload them. At that point, you'd have to change them to a non-restricted HQ to transfer them back.

Correct, they will abandon ship to a base ... the point where you will have to pay is to get them back off that base.

So, why is it that Japanese CAGs get stuck in restricted commands?

It's a bug ... never been able to find the actual cause to get it fixed. Simple solution is to dock the CV's at a NON restricted HQ's Base before visiting a restricted HQ's Base and let it flip to them first. Once flipped, it will never change.

Since Japan's CV's are more likely to go to Japan, they are more likely to get stuck to Home HQ vs USA CV's hanging around in CENT/SO/SWPAC all of which are unrestricted.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Sucks when you're playing the 42A campaign, though.
