The food does not seem to add up within my nation. Provinces add up to 77 food. Yet the total food produced is given as 54.

This may refer to transport (due to the population not being where the food is produced) or it may be due to some other factor -- but I would like to know the general idea, so as to minimize the loss.

No, economic advisor is not on, and no I have not traded food.

So your answer implies that you are not seeing this too?

I am not seeing this, no. I show (for example, in one savegame) provinces producing 211 food. Imports bring another 16 food. That adds to 227 and that is the amount of produced food shown in the left column on the Economy pop-up screen.

Have you paged through the Economy screen and checked all the modifiers? For example, Developments, National Morale, and Taxes?

You also need to know that if your armies are using supply depots, some of the food is going to them. Any armies or corps on depot supply draw money and food.

You may also have waste.

HOWEVER: I often cant get the numbers to completely add up. Eric is producing a detailed guide to the economy, so when that comes out we will know. Until then, I recommend you don't kill tooo many b rain cells over it.

I never get my food to add up. As Spain in my last game, it indicated that I needed 122 Food per turn (plus or minus). I never produced above 110 in any turn (on the Province Screen), never imported any, and I still never saw my stockpiles really deplete (and they often increased).

I think part of it is that there are various bonuses for various things (as listed on the Econ reports tab thingy). These dont appear to be calculated in on some screens (but might be on others). Waste also appears to be figured in when you are on the Trade screen, but not elsewhere.

I'm hoping the first patch adds some internal consistancy in the data displayed or at least a notation on each as to whether the figure is 'net', 'gross', or something completely different.

Yeah, there seems to be alot under the hood and out of sight. I like it in a way because I don't like to be able to calculate everything exactly, but it might be a bit excessive here.

I too am trying to get my head around the game economy.

In my first game I played Britan, which is supposed to be an economic powerhouse (historically). Yet I couldn't get my economy going. Money was always a problem.

Thanks to the starting tips Ralegh suggested, I discovered I had left all the default settings on. [X(]

There are so many things that the player must attend to, it's easy to overlook some things. Yes, I'm a micromanager. I like that but it is obvious to me that it will take me a few days of messing around before I actually am able to start a real game. That's great as the last few games I have bought bored me after a few days.

8.12 and 8.15 of the manuel, along with page 11 of the tutorial, should give an idea why the (expected) provincial production values don't necessarily add up to equal to the (actual) national sum total.
