Can divisions garrisoned in cities not forage? I started a game as Prussia in 1796, set all my units to forage, but my garrisoned militia seemed to still draw normal supply (marked a "supplied" instead of "successful foraging", and food and money was drawn).

Also, after the first turn a few cities started producing units unprovoked, which I didn't even have the resources for. Is this because of feudal levies? Extra men in the draft pool?

This game seems excellent, if I could just get a handle on how things work...

I would guess that since units in cities only require 50% upkeep compared to units in the field, that the city garrison must draw regular supply. Makes sense; can't have a city garrison spread all over a province foraging while being responsible for the defense of a city. I would also guess that you are correct about the spontaneous units appearing being Feudal Levies. Were they all Militia units? If so then they were certainly Feudal Levies. Yeah, after two complete reads of the manual and all of Raleighs guides, I think I am finally starting to get a tenative grasp of the mechanics of this beautiful beast.

I don't think they were militia. I know two were cavalry, and I think the third was a regular infantry unit. I'll try playing again tonight and see if it happenes again...

My guess is that such units were programmed to come into play as reinforcements. They are not necessarily feudal levies and should appear in the same phase as the draftees come out of training to enter military service in depleted units.

The only forces that are 'programmed' to come into play at a particular time are leaders.
Military units MUST be either:
- be built by you
- be a reaction to your draft
- be feudal levies or similiar

The units that spontaneously start building in cities are feudal levies. Happens quite often as Russia.
