Para attack--Bug, exploit, or feature

You have a force which can't quite get the needed 1 to 1 odds to make progress. So you set your force on shock attack and send in a few flights of para's. The para's trigger defensive bombardment. Now it has been shown the bombarding reduces you're defensive strength by as much as half. (Thats why if the enemy is superior in a hex you should be very careful about bombarding and should probably just defend)

With your force halved and the attackers force doubled (for shock attack) you have effectively quadrupled you're attacking odds.

I believe the same tactic will work with the river assault rule and amphib assaults. Get you're main force across and rested to attack. Then shock attack while a tiny force lands or crosses the river to trigger the bombardment attack.

Thoughts.

Is this by design or just a side effect of the way the system works?

See thread Random Ground combat. Also just test it out as you play. As allies if you just leave your guys on defend you will do much better at slowing the tidal wave. If you bombard you will be much more easily pushed out.

As far as I know everyone who has tested this out has confirmed that bombarding will cause you to do much more poorly against enemy attacks.

Its very easy to test. At any time early in an AI or head-to head game just set all the defenders (in all contested locations) to bombard and save. Run the turn. Go back to the save and set all your defenders to defend only. Run the turn. Compare results. You will see that defend only does far better.

I don't know if its by design. But it does work.
