Algerian Protectorate

Playing Turkey I've been trying out different sequences of events in getting North Africa under my sway. I've discovered that declaring war immediately on Cyrenaica and invading with the Egyptians seems to get Tripolitania to request protectorate status soon afterwards (maybe with a little bribing). I usually then send Pasha down to Tunisia to charm them while I clean up Cyrenaica.

Interestingly, while I was checking Algeria's attitude I noticed that a menu option had shown up (right click on province, click on Algeria) "Form Protectorate". Yay, another bloodless protectorate!

Sure enough, they join forces but with one interesting difference: instead of just the usual vertical shading to indicate protectorate status, Algeria has both vertical and diagonal shading. What's that mean?

It's easy to reproduce. Only takes about 4 turns as Turkey.

Sep 1805:
Declare war on Cyrenaica and move in the Egyptian armies.
Bribe Tripoli with 50 bucks.
Move Pasha to Ionian sea.
End turn

Oct 1805:
Seige occurs in Cyrenaica.
Bribe Tripoli with 50 bucks.
Move Pasha into Tunisia with Charm orders.
End turn.

Nov 1805:
Seige still in Cyrenaica.
If Tripoli doesn't ask for Protectorate, check their province menu.
End turn.

Dec 1805:
Check Algerian province menu and form protectorate. It should be there.
End Turn.

You will now see the funky shading.
