Detailed Battle Crash

First for the disclaimer:
I love this game very much, and I can not wait for the patches that will make it eve better.

Now, I have just started a new game on the Difficult level as Prussia in the 1820 campaign. I was kicking butt everywhere, and allied with everyone else, and I was feeling pretty good about myself. The French invade me with an 80,000+ army. I had 40,000, but reinforcements on the way! For a day and a half of detailed combat, I am slugging it out with the French forces. I mean real toe to toe type stuff. It really heightened my enjoyment of the whole COG experience. The tide slowely began to turn in my favor when I captured his supply wagon, which was the only one on either side! Finally, I get the message of him retreating and the day is mine, we just have to mop up.
Then, without warning, my computer freezes and CTDs. I was furious and said a few choice words. I calmed down after awhile and then brought out the autosave. Same battle occurred, and honestly things weren't not going well for us Prussians. However, I didn't even get through the first day before the CTD. The only message I received was the microsoft error message where it asks you if you want to send a "detailed message" to microsoft about the problem. Sorry, I can't be more technical, but I ma lucky I can even turn my computer on!
Anyway, I have been playing this game since last weekend and have had only one other CTD, also in a detailed battle. However, I changed my display settings and that had seemed to work until last night..
Any suggestions for a computer moron like myself?

Did I mention how much I like this game! [;)]

Have you updated your video drivers to the latest? We're working to track down and fix these detailed battle crashes, but some customers have had luck resolving them through a driver update.

Try diver video update and then Defragmentation. And keep on working with it!!!
Right now I played over 20+detail battles without a problem. The game is running perfect. One thing that I found out is never reinstall. If you do you'll be back at step one.

You have an old Voodoo card? There are no updated drivers for that, as far as I know. Have you had any problems with other games?

The more I think about it, I believe I have an Nvidia not a Voodoo. Does Nividia 32 or 6400 sound familiar? grrr
I will just have to wait until I get home from before I drive myself crazy!

Did I mention that I love the game?[&o]

I believe there is info about Nvidia drivers on the other thread--the "Display Error" thread.

Thanks Z, it was very informative. I am going to give the drivers a go when I get to the house this afternoon.

I get this detailed battle ctd regularly. I updated to the newest drivers for my Nvidia card + defragmented my HD but the frequency with which I get ctd's has not changed.

I found that updated drivers really don't help. I am convinced there is something in a savegame that somehow causes this. I can load the same save and the ensuing battle will crash every time, even after I reboot the machine. But then I start a new game and can play one detailed battle after another without a problem. I am sorry to say that I think that campaign is done. If your experiences are anything like mine, then playing that game will give you nothing but frustration. However, you can start a new game and likely be fine. That said, try and and if it keeps blowing up on you then please zip and upload that savegame so that they can see if it will happen for them so that we might be able to get a resolution for these problems.

My experience is not quite that predictable. I can, sometimes, play several battles in a row without CTD, but it is currently occuring perhaps during 1 in 3 or 4 battles. The last time it occured just after I had 2 artillery divisions surrender to me, giving me a sneaking suspicion that it is a perfidious AI tactic rather than a bug [;)]

I cannot upload a zip file to this forum, because it will only accept .gif .txt and .jpg. I would send it to an email address were one provided however.

Edit: I see others have manage to upload zips as a .txt file. I'm being dense, but don't know how to do this. If I simply change the name of the file I end up with a Filename.txt.zip

Likewise, I have updated drivers for my ATI 9800 Pro and am suffering battle crashes. It's a shame because it happens often enough that it pretty much ruins that aspect for me since it happens so often. Hope you can identify the bug soon and get it fixed..

Just an update. I updated my drivers and the CDT went away for detailed battles until last night. It happened when both sides broke at the same time. After a few turns of watching the AI run both sides off the board, it locked up.

Both sides retreating from battle at the same time is a known bug, and is seperate from the CTD during battle... not sure if Eric has a fix for this in the soon to arrive patch or not, but he is well aware of it and I am sure will get it fixed soon.

yea, Kid that one is a bug

also, while updateing drivers may help, it also seems to happen randomly, last week after updateing, I only had 2 crashes, where in my first full game played, I had to go with quick combat the whole game, as they were happening so often

for Nvida Drivers try here
