Why Units Get Stuck After a Surrender

OK, I think I spotted the problem with this. When a nation surrenders, any units that it has that are in foreign territory are moved back home and their movement orders erased prior to the rest of turn execution. However, if any units are in a home province and have been given orders to enter enemy territory then those orders will be carried out, leaving those units stranded in what has just become an inaccessable province.

Also, did the treaty exploit get logged? If you select more Victory Points worth of "stuff" than you have points to spend, it says that it won't accept it at the bottom of the screen. But if you go ahead and hit OK, it accepts it anyway. OK likely should not be an option for Surrender treaties while the points are in excess of those allowed.

Finally, the advisor is off on treaties. Several times I have made proposals that the advisor said they likely would not accept and they took it. I don't mind a little ambiguity and guesswork, but just make sure it is working as intended.

Here are my thoughts on the "trapped" unit issue:

(1) have an automatic passage treaty imposed on nations that lose a war in addition to the regular terms of surrender treaty.

(2) the game should already turn-on violate territory if your units end up trapped, though you may have to wait a round for it. I have seen this work in some situations, but it may be the case that it's not always working. I'll look at adding code so that it always gets turned on at the start of your turn if you are de facto violating territory.

Re treaty exploit, I did add this to the list. Our beta testers must be very scrupulous people not to have discovered this!

Treaty advisor seems to be working alright, though situations do change between his recommendations and when treaties are proposed (shifts in attitude and balance of power cause the AI to evaluate treaties differently). There is a bug in the counter-offer: the adviser says they have no interest because the old treaty is still on the list of treaties and so, to your adviser, it looks as though your counter-offer is a redundant treaty proposal, even though by the time the AI sees your proposal it is no longer a redundant proposal.

I would add in one thing - after a surrender, cycle through all units of the former combatants and cancel any move orders that include any provinces of former enemies (or just use whatever "is this a legal move" logic and cancel the move if it comes back as "no").

A funny thing to add. I had ordered a corps to pillage in an enemy's city before I accepted this enemy's surrender. The corps was sent home to pillage a couple of developments of my land. :p

Once the troops get the lust of pillaging in their veins it's hard to cool them down! I wanted to allow pillaging of home territory (for a few reasons) but maybe something can be done to turn off the pillaging order whenever units get shunted home after a war.

This is similar to the results Austria sometimes gets when France surrenders and all the Austrian troops are moved to the closest Austrian province... Tyrolia... and have to forage there because the player didn't know he'd need a depot there. When France gets close to surrendering, I've taken to building a precautionary depot in the Tyrol just in case...

Yes, this has happened to my troops on a couple of occasions. As my French forces moved from Tyrolia (ceded to me after the last war) into Linz, the pesky Austrians surrendered, leaving my army stuck in an enemy province. I couldn't move them out again for a year, when the agreed peace had ended.

Did turning on "violate neutrality" work?

It should be turning this on automatically... I've moved this into the bug fix category. I know it sometimes works for me now, so it must be something that doesn't work only i some circumstances.
