In-Situ Defence

Just got this great game in the weekeng. I can't understand how I missed this one as I remember playing a demo of what must have been RDOA. Maybe I have garnerd a greater interest for operations in preference to tactics over time?
Anyway, as stated at several places one can play this game in many ways with more or less micromanaging. I personally like to command mostly at the battalion level. But in one instance I like to get down and dirty and that is in the setup of defences meant to stay in place for some time. I want to make sure all my coys are in good terrain and perhaps using different formations. Then I have started to give the HQ of the Bn/Rgt a defend in-situ order so as to reduce command load on the supreme HQ.
This has the advantage of placing all units where I wan't them. But then everybody wind up in the defend in-situ formation, there is no retaking of lost ground etc. What do you veterans say? I haven't played much yet so I really don't know how well the AI sets up.
Any takers?
