Mixed Order

I'm playing France in the 1792 Campaign.

I noticed that one of the Upgrades I'd started with is Mixed Order.

From the manual:

"non-guard infantry in line formation do -25% damage, but if they have at least 9 move points, can follow-up an attack with a charge if defender can be charged and is disordered; adds +1.0 to unit morale when attempting to form a line"

I really liked the sound of this, so I tried to put it to use.

I've had no luck.

Non-fatigued Inf in Line seem to have 12 movement points. I know there's an upgrade to get more, but it's never been available to me (is there a prereq?). If adjacent to an enemy in line, when I shoot it should consume 6 movement points, leaving me only 6...not enough to charge.

So I started attaching leaders to the Inf divisions that added bonus movement points. With a +3 movement leader, I should be able to start adjacent to an enemy with 15 movement points, fire (-6 mp), and still have enough points to charge. It never happens though.

I'm positive the enemies have been disordered before trying.

Has anyone been successful in the use of this Upgrade? Am I doing something wrong?

No idea. I only got it because it made forming a line a lot easier. And I do mean, a lot. Before, I had a roughly 30% chance of getting into line, now I have 80%.

I do wish to know what the rest of that is about.

The developers didn't seemingly stop at that. There may be one more "if" - say, if that very inf div blessed with mixed order has a certain (e.g. double) size relative to their target.

Hm. [scratches chin] I don't remember anything in the version histories. I'll have to check with Eric.

The short answer is, we don't know. Eric will try to make some changes to the next patch or two to see if it can be fixed.

Does this mean that my french inf has -25% firepower, as France starts with the mixed order upgrade, in exchange for ...nothing? That could explain some odd results I get sometimes.
I have noticed that firing at disordered units does not inflict a lot of damage. In fact most of the time my formed units are the losers in those fire exchanges. Can anyone confirm this? I know thay are very vulnerable to charges, but shouldn’t disordered units be weaker than ordered ones in every kind of fighting?

Disordered units are weaker than formed units in *almost* every way. The advantage of disordered units is that they have some protection against artillery fire relative to formed units. They don't have increased vulnerability to fire attacks, but as you mentioned do have increased vulnerability to charges.

There may be a bug in "Mixed Order" which suppresses the auto-charging under some conditions in which it ought not; I'm looking into it.
