China in CHS

Just mentioned that the Chinese kept their old TOE in CHS. Wonder how they'll do against the Japanese with strengthened TOE's. Currently a Japanese Independent Mixed Brigade seems to have about the same combat strength as a Chinese Corps... (well, in case I've an older version of CHS on my machine, excuse the error, don't want to stirr up something [8D]).

I haven't looked at 1.02 yet, so my comments are based on CHS 1.0.
One thing I've noticed in my game vs the AI is that the Northern chinese units are pretty much cut off from the rest of China. They have to traverse about 3 or 4 hexes of trail only to either escape or get reinforcements. Japan on the other hand has rail connecting all of their bases so, they can do the "massive force vs one base" thing pretty quick. I think it would be pretty easy for Japan to "Divide and conquer", at least the northern part.
I haven't tried this vs the AI, let alone vs another player. But, it looks like something that a gamey player could exploit and the allied player would be potentially unable to respond with equal force.
Take into account the increased size of Japans Chinese divisions, and you could see some games where China is completely conquered again.
Again, it's not like I'm an expert at the game (I only play vs AI), so maybe my observations are incorrect.
If others see this as well, or have actually demonstrated the ability of Japan to conquer China, I would suggest making the trail that connects Chungking to the northern area into a road.

After the lengthy discussions on the Chinese supply situation in the basic scenario 15 as well as CHS...I started to do some preliminary research on the Chinese.
Some of my initial findings have led me to the following conclusions...
1. The transportation net as currently represented is much greater than what existed and should be downgraded.
2. The disposition of Chinese and Japanese forces are flawed.
From the Chinese account of the Third Battle of Changsha launched December 19, 1941
a. - The Japanese should actually start one hex closer to Changsha along the rail line.
b. - The Chinese need more corps to be positioned adjacent to the railine from Changsha to Hankow.

Additional info on dispositions...
2c. According to the Chinese history the Port city of Wenchow was not occupied by the Japanese until July 11, 1942. and this as a result of
2d. In late April the Japanese began to prepare to launch an offensive in the Chekiang and Kiansi provinces to occupy Chinese airfields in the area because of the Doolittle raid. This is the area between Nanchang and Wenchow and Hangchow. From the chinese history it would appear that the Chinese should have some presence near the route from Nanchang to Hangchow. Notice there were Chinese units North of the rail line probably in the woods hex do east of Nanchang as represented on the game map.

Hypothetical questions...
What are Japanese players motivations in China?
a. garnering resources?
b. garnering VP's for bases?
c. conquering China to free up Japanese units?
d. something to do...
e. other ___________?
What are Allied players motivations in China?
a. killing Japanese?
b. tying down Japanese forces?
c. being able to establish bomber bases?
What would happen if all Chinese bases fort levels were doubled?
What would happen if VP values for Chinese bases were eliminated?
Can partisan levels be adjusted? If so what if they were doubled?

Can you enter a negative value in for a base? In other words capturing a base would give you negative victory points>? Sorta poison pill the chinese bases. That way the Jap player who wants to run wild in China is not going to get very much of anything.
Perhaps we could look at doing that with the soviets as well...if it works
Just a thought

Treespider - you are correct - and they are changes planned to address this. Andrew is working on changing his map and I am working on changing the Chinese OB ( and I recognize that book too ! ). Andrew's timeframe is 2-3 weeks ( which will include additional downgrades of transportation network ) however, my timeframe is farther out because I'm moving and I have to assimilate quit a bit of data from a number of different sources and reconcile and then translate into game terms. But there are fixes planned !!
