SS Panzer Bataillon ”Spieß” is part of the 5. SS Division ”Wiking.” We have attacked to Russia and are marching towards Tarnopol. Führer says they are untermenschen. According to my older brothers experience in last war I’m not so sure about our Corporals words. I don’t know what to expect here.[&:] But I know they’ll show us what they got.
Front VHs: 2 groups, 10 per turn
Back VHs: 2 groups, 100 end of battle
One group of VHs is in far south and one large group of them are little north of center around the road. The road goes W-E To Tarnopol. Area is quite open. Few smaller hills in center and in north. Bigger hill in south just north of VHs. After southern VHs comes forest and hill covered with woods. Another hill is north from that in the middle. Road goes on the hill and to NE where is another hill and forest south from that. In no man’s land is one hill in the middle. Also small N-S river goes between our lines.
Because we are in a horry to strike Russians I’ll commit major attack along the road. Task force is to take southern hexes. Jagd-Kommando platoon is to infiltrate in front of southern rear hill, seek and destroy enemy units in forest and on the hill. And maybe give some good coordinates to artillery too. Another will pop up south from rear hill, also in forest.
Platoon of each: Pz-IVs, SS and engineers along with one Pz-I and sIG33 will take southern hexes. Others are reaching those in the middle. I’ll send 88s to central hill to provide some cover. Kuebelwagens are to scout enemy frontline and after that We’re directing massive bombardment on it. After 88s Norwegians Pz-IIIh have the best AT-gun and they are following main force as tank destroyers. We’ll see now how good they are... Pz-IIIh –models AND the Norwegians.
Turn 1: little scouting showed us few tanks and frontline location in north. In south it seems that no one is guarding the hexes! Are they sort of men or what?
Turn 2: North: Destroyed T-28 and T-35 from long distance. South: Ok now I see... at least five T-28s about 300 meters after hexes behind small hill. Established a line next to hexes. Small arms fire from the distance.
Turn 3: North: More T-28s coming with infantry on them. Pz-IVs destroyed three over a kilometer distance. South one T-28 showed his nose on a hill and got a kiss. Waiting for others to come. Took hexes.
Turn 4: North: Lots of small arms fire from the distance. Nothing serious. Attacked and pushed Soviet infantry back about 150-200 meters in half a kilometer wide area. Tanks are working well against infantry in open area. South: Two T-28s come and destroyed my Pz-IV. Got both but it took too many shots. Not good, not good at all. Found infantry and at least four maxim northern side of hill. Destroyed few and took west side of the hill.
Turn 5: Soviet artillery barrage going wide both north and south. Focke-Wulf 189 attacked and saw at least five T-34s on rear hill. Destroyed one with 50kg bomb. Also saw couple companies of Soviet infantry NE to our main force. Masses of infantry ahead also. We now have pushed them back 500 meters. Ordered lots of mortar fire on their positions. Accuracy won’t matter, there are so much of them. And can’t get the artillery on line! We have targets but they are on a coffey break! South: 37mm AAs are shooting from somewhere. Keeping positions, smoking little.
Turn 6: Main troops contacted with southern task force destroying about company of enemies between them. Main force broke through and took VHs. Masses of infantry on left flank. Shot and smoked their view. Then ordered more shells on them. Took 88s off the hill – Russians are trying to find them on artillery.
Turn 7: Another Fw-189 dived and took out one T-34 from rear hill. They got lots of AA. Few of them on a hill in the middle. Im closing in from south so T-34s from rear hill can’t see me. AAs were shooting back but are now pinned down due to tanks 75mm and MG34 fire. Two kuebelwagens, two Pz-IIIs and SS rifle squad reached the hill and destroyed guns. Took 88 to a position it sees T-34 on rear hill but that probably won’t see it about 1,5 km distance. North: Trying to encircle northern defenders. Destroyed two T-35s. Also south trying to round the hill and approach those three T-28s from back.
Turn 8: They’ve got few AAs in front of rear hill. Two Bf-110s dived. Another was shot down but anoher destroyed T-34 behind rear hill. 88 knocked another out. Two J-Ks popped up and found Hq in southern hexes. Now they are without leader and commissar. Norwegian Pz-III destroyed T-34s main gun  Two halftracks and infantry went towards the AA trying to see them. After came Pz-I – they found and destroyed two 37mm AAs – cost: one halftrack. Two Kubelwagens found two other AA-guns on a hill. Suffered some damage but are still alive. T-34 near them is not shooting at all. Another T-34 on top of hill is routed. SS squad came in by halftrack and took out both guns. Now we have to deal those T-34s. And have to waite main forces, these few are now quite far from them. Northern defenders have now been encircled and we are tightening the box. They are in panic and this is just turkey shooting with minimal casualties. There are several companies in 200x500 meters area. Also continuous mortar fire is suppressing them badly.
Turn 9: T-28s in south are withdrawing and crashed my tanks that were coming from their back. One down by Pz-IIIh, one by SS squad (7% assault) one is still running. One lucky shot got my Pz-III. Middle: 88 took out T-34. North: clearing area. Pz-Ib really is a reapermachine! This was something new to me. Hadn’t notice it untill now. Others are also doing fine job. SS-Oberscharführer Kaptain scored eight kills in a turn with his Pz-IV. SS-Oberscharführer Vogel took nine out with his engineers and SS-Oberscharführer Lang seven with his Pz-III. This is total massacre. And many are surrendering.
Turn 10: Still some small arms fire from the pocket. Trying to fight tanks with rifles. Cleared pocket, now away from the incoming barrage. South: J-K assulted remaining T-28.
Turn 11: Barrage didn’t came. This is practically over.
Battle ended. Soviet forces in front of Tarnopol are totally beaten. No one fled to tell. Artillery wonders why they can’t reach polkovnik (colonel) for coordinates. Soon they’ll find out when German tanks overdrive their positions. Green Norwegians did fine job. Seems like these Soviets are not comparable to SS.[8D] But T-34 seems to be fine tank. I’m upgrading my Pz-IIIe to Pz-IIIh models. I’m also having few other changes. This Division has many nationalities and God only knows with who we are fighting next if we stay in this division long enough. Rumors say...well, rumors are rumors, we’ll wait orders.
