Upgrades and their usefulness

A bit of new info came my way today, on things I didn't know about some upgrades:

a) Artillery Ranging: the description says something like it reduces range by 2 hexes, which deson't sound like much of an upgrade. Turns out what they meant is that fire has effect as if it were 2 hexes closer (so firing at 5 hexes with the upgrade is like firing at 3 hexes without it). Thats more worth having!

b) Cavalry Ferocity: The chance to capture artillery or supply caissons depends on DISPLACING them - and since ferocity adds to the ability for cavalry to displace...

c) Cavalry Organisation has a huge impact on the time cavalry need to reform after getting disordered!

I have submitted some suggestions to improve some of the weaker upgrades, which may make it into a future patch (not this first one).

Hi Ralegh
I`m new to the game and so I don`t really know which upgrade is worth having it. There seem to be some strategic upgrades and some which are usefull in hex combat. Can you give me a hint which ones are the really "must have" upgrades.
Thanx for your help
Helmut

Helmut, you dredged up a 3 year old post, not sure if Ralegh is still around.  I do believe they are fairly well described in the appendix.  One of my favorites is Nationalism because National Morale is pretty important in the game so when it runs low, which it probably will for every nation but possibly France or Britain, Nationalism helps turn NM around.  Other than that, infantry upgrades of course give you the most bang for the buck because that's your most common unit.  I try not to forget about cav giving them the organization bonus because anything to help them gain good order again is important.  Levee en Mass is another favorite of mine because you will find it is cheaper to replace strength than to build whole new units.

Hi Joram
Yes this was an old post but I prefer to look what is going on with a game and do not jump on every new title. One of my favorites from Matrix Games is War in the Pacific and I wait for the Admiral`s Edition.
Okay I didn`t experience a problem with low moral, my be that`s a problem on higher levels. Having all the upgrades for infantry is mandatory. But what is the use of getting more strategic-level initiative with March-Logistics? Whats about those navy upgrades? Is there any sense, cause they sound not sooo great?
Greetings
Helmut
