Maybe a prototype of the Blackburn Firebrand?
The shape yells Blackburn.

I've checked everything I could find on Blackburn aircraft, pre - during- and post WWII.
nothing, not even a close resemblance to that photo.
Still looking

Before you tear ALL your hair out, let me give you a little hint: it's not a Blackburn aircraft.

The only thing British I would place a half hearted guess at would be a Hawker. Mid to late 1930"s.
I can make out the outline of a cannon, probly 20mm. A guess only

That's not a cannon but a pitot tube. Okay, it IS probably on the difficult side, but I'll let it run for a bit longer...

This is difficult. At least this time I could actually study it before someone guessed correctly.
You say it IS British, but, the insignia intrigues me. Although this is a black and white photo the gray shading suggests a French insignia, light color (red) on the outside dark color (blue) on the inside. Just the opposite of a British insignia. Or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

It's a British pre-war prototype aircraft. No more hints. [;)]

Nope again. Okay, this was probably too difficult. It's called a Vickers Venom, and was a prototype flown before the war as I said earlier. It was very agile, but couldn't match the speed of it's RR Merlin-engined contemporaries and so was scrapped in 1939.

A thoroughly refined Vickers Jockey, with cantilever wings, retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpit and cowled engine. Handling was excellent, but the Venom needed more engine power. The Aquila engine was not produced in quantity and the Venom was too small for other engines. One built.
