Yes, the IJN DDs will torpedo US Subs (and vice versa). This has been commented about in several threads now...

Well, yeah - you could try searching them, but the forum search functions don't work very these days...[:(] The threads could have been when you were absent for a while...

As some one said earlier, US subs did torpedo themselves in the war. Runaway torpedoes were a real concern. Getting hit by your own fish is a real bummer.

Sailfish's skipper probably has (or HAD by now) a very high agression level and decided to surface in order to attack an "unescorted" convoy on the sufarce. While doing so he got jumped by the escord that had been lurking on the OTHER side of the convoy. Sailfish fled gallantly, but while trying to crash dive got struck by a torpedo launched by IJN destroyer Asagiri......

I've come to realize that kind of thing happened more often than would seem normal. Morrison, Blair, etc. all have multiple accounts of escorts firing torpedoes at submarines.

I think it is more probable that the Sailfish was surprised on the surface (that is the normal place to be at night for WW2 submarines) and sunk by a torpedo before being able to dive. WITP submarines only attack on the surface unescorted ships.

Apparently it was possible to put some sort of guidance mechanism in backwards, which would cause the torpedo to circle. This was never mentioned when they talked/wrote about the problem, but i found it mentioned (sort of in passing) in a sub commander's memoirs.

Off Formosa on 25 October 1944, the USS Tang commanded by CDR Richard H. O'Kane, USN, fired a torpedo at a transport ship but the torpedo ran wild and ended up sinking the Tang. Only 9 men, including O'Kane, survived out of a crew of 87.

WITP submarines only attack on the surface for ships they THINK are unescorted.

This is why it is a good thing for your subs to get the radar upgrades...

I read everyone's commentary up to this point - and though many have pointed out that it could happen in reality, I don't believe I have seen a definitive yes or know to the main question - namely - does the game allow this or was that a glitch?

Yes the game allows it - DDs can torpedo Subs. It has been mentioned in several prior threads, including comments from Mr. Frag, iirc.

ships have had the ability to torp subs attacking on the surface since UV days.

According to this, Tullibee and Tang both sank themselves. I believe there may have been one or two others, but my favorite scource material is not on hand...

USS Tullibee sank herself with a circling torpedo as well. Confirmed by the sole survivor.

It's possible that at least a couple other's were sunk the same way, but can't be confirmed. USS Wahoo is one that Dick O'Kane thought was sunk by a circling torpedo. No one will ever know, though.
