I am in command of a heavy tank company in Finland. Reinforced by three companys of heavy infantry equipped with the best and latest arms Russia has today. It is cold but clear today. Visability however is limited because of the heavy forest. We have set up a defensive line on the west side of a river that runs the whole length of the map from NE to SW. We are west of river at least 400 yards in a thick forest of trees. There are not many clear fields of fire due to the trees. These lanes of fire is where I set up my HMG and Atgs.

I have also set up several platoons of tanks behind each company as a mobile defenseive force. They are close enough so as to move up and help with any attack in force along any of our fronts.Each company is set up in a three platoon front so as to cover more ground. A fourth platoon has been placed out in front of each platoon as a screen to warn of any efforts by the enemy. They are to fall back on there respective companys at the first sign of attack.

I figure this will be a bloody defense due to the nature of the enemy. We understand they are masters of camoflauge. The fluid nature of our defense setup should counter any infiltration by the enemy tho. Wish we had the time to cut down some of these dam trees tho for a better field of fire. Would have allowed our tanks to manuver more freely as well. Our boys are in high spirits and rarin to fight for mother Russia.

Each company has a platoon of light tanks attached to it along with a section of 82 and 120 mortars. Our heavy tanks will be at a disadvantge tho due to the heavy forest we find our self in. They have been placed near or fairly close to the objectives of the enemy as a reserve stop gap force in case any enemy slips past our front line.

A second line of defense is a wise move against those ferocious Finnish troops. I have fought them, and their ski troops are very swift -- they seem to literally emerge from the ground and swoop down upon you.

0345 Hours

It is dark out and still hard to see. The first enemy troops hit our lines about 20 minutes ago. The first explosions from the mine fields made us all jump up with a bang. The first mines went off at near 0315 maybe ten minutes later the first enemy was sighted they hit the left flank of c company first. The chatter of our HMG greeted the first Engineer squad with devastating force. The squad was quickly delt with and sent running. They were not sighted until within 50 yards of the gun. Since then they have continued to hit the left side of there line. The HMG was forced back for awhile but quickly regained the ground lost. Sent the platoon of light tanks to assist them. They took out 2 light recon cars that were helping the Engineers. All has been quite for the last 10 minutes from that sector.

Called down the heavy guns to bombard just east of the section of mine field that they had to come thru. Also dropped some 120 mortar shells in the forest just east of the HMG in the forest . Will continue this bombbardment for the next 10 minutes or so. Our losses so far have been slight hope this continues throughout the rest of this battle. Dont want to write a lot of letters to the folks back home tonight. It is very cold but it really isnt that real bitter cold. Doesnt get deep into the bones that mind numbing cold like in Siberia. Our heads are clear and we know what we must do here today to keep Mother Russia free.

And for heaven's sake, watch the morale of your men! I just ran a generated battle, defending against a Finnish assault. I took them all of 3 turns to overrun my line, even though I had artillery and KV's. If I'd sprung for some mines, it might have taken 5 turns instead. Soviet infantry in 1939 is all but useless...

The Finns continue to hit the left flank of company C. We have lost 2 light tanks there so far. They are sending in squads of assaulting Engineers. The HMG has been destroyed. The flank is holding but only because I sent a platoon of light tanks to help.

Have seen no enemy activity any where else along the front. Except for the fighing there it has been too quite any where else. I keep waiting for the hammer to fall some where along the front. This can not be the extent of there force.

I continue to bombard to the east of where the attack is coming from. Maybe this is really slowing them down more then i think. It is tough seeing them before they reach our lines. They are like ghosts that rise up from the ground in front of us. This will be over shortly and we will be victorius im sure.

The Finns continue to try and breach my lines in only one sector. They have not been sighted any where else along my front. There has been no attempt to hit my line any where but there. The left flank of C has been holding them at bay.

Maybe my big guns are really hurting them more then i think. Or this has not realy been a concentrated attack. What ever it is our losses have been very slight today. They have not been to keen on fighting today. Victory is ours there is no doubt about that.

For a major battle this is really very slow. Not much to report so far. The only action is on left flank of c in the middle of the map. There has been no major push just piece meal attacks from some Engineer squads. No other part of the line has had any sight of the enemy today. I dont know if they too are having a hard time moving men and equipment up to engage us or what. The woods are really thick where we set up our defrnsive lines. This has been the easiest and least action battle I have ever been in.

The battle is over we have taken the field. I wouldnt even call it a battle. They never mounted any kind of an offensive. We sat and waited but they never came to fight. We lost 34 men and 2 afv while taking out 5 of there afv and 611 men. They had to have more men then that im sure. They just never reached our lines. We are pulling back to rest till next time I assume. I dont see why but the high command says so. Our men where never really tested to day. Our big tanks hardly did any thing except dit and wait for an enemy that never showed up for the battle. Ive heard the saying what happens if they have a war and no one comes to it.

well that happened today we invited them to a war and no one showed. We re to stay here in finland where I dont know but I hope all the battles are as easy as today.
