Gibraltar undermanned

Gibraltar begins with 1 militia. If the Spanish march everything to besiege on turn one, they will get 2 or 3 attempts before a reinforcement can be shipped in. In my test attacks the Spanish did 2500-5000 damage per breach, and were able to get in a fair amount of times.

IMHO Gibraltar should begin with 3 militia.

I was considering making a special gibraltar rule since, I believe, it is already maxed-out. 3 militia would help, though the numbers would be a-historical.

Hmm - yes, I remember: Gibraltar got strengthened very late in the beta. Not enough, huh? If we want a short term fix, chucking a few more militia in the city is something we can do.

I think the ability to exert force against a fort was partially dependant on the terrain, which in the case of Gibraltar made it pretty darn hard. I don't think the Spanish should be able to have all those guys fighting against the fort at once. Didn't we have a limitation on the number of units that could be used against a city?

Here is another idea - how about a special military unit - a Gibraltar Cannons unit (artillery, but with a movement of zero). That way if the British lose Gibraltar, it is no longer quite so impervious... In fact, that would make a nice addition to the expansion pack - a zero movement unit for "upgrading" forts.

The other thing we could think about is having a bit of a set-up phase, for the player to redistribute starting forces before the game begins...

Although if the Spanish march everything south to Gibraltar, the British will take Ile de France and have a good chance of knocking France out of the war, which eventually reaps a bitter harvest for Spain. Gibraltar as a tempting target is an important part of my British strategy. (And as France I would REQUIRE my ally to send an army into Europe.)

Maybe leaving it alone wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Tried this in a pBEM, albeit Britain is run by the AI, I as Spain, was forced to abandon the seige of Gibraltar, to face the British troops in my capital province, and then Portugal declared for the british!(oh how I laughed! [8|])

The AI is currently leading in our game [X(] .... however only 18 months played so far!

What, you mean more walls and guns were added? Yeah, that doesn't help all that much when there's only 10k bodies inside. Just another militia or two would fortify the position until proper reinforcements arrive.

IRL Gibraltar's strengths were the difficulty for a large hostile land force to pressure the defenders (Difficult for the game to model?) the isthmus is only about 6.5 sq km, and British command of the seas and thus a ready access to supply and reinforcements (already modeled within the game).... the actual numbers of garrison troops was never very high, IIRC, even today the entire population is less than 30,000.
