aircraft reserves

Recently after transfering a squadron of 24 Vals to a CVL, 12 of the 24 were put into the reserve catagory on board the CVL. So whats up with this? I can understand keeping 10% or even 20% in reserve but not 50%. The 24 aircraft in the squadron did not exceed the a/c capacity of the ship. I'm still using version 2.3. This is not the only time this has happened I've noticed other squadrons with half their planes in reserve before. Is this a bug or just something I have to live with? Now I've transfered the squadron back to Rabual and only the 12 active planes made the move. 12 a/c remain in reserve aboard the CVL. There are 24 pilots available in the squadron.

CV and CVL have a limit to use a maximum number of specific aircraft.
Example: You may move three 24-plane fighter groups on a CV but usually only ~40 will fly, all other go to reserve (amount depends on jap/allied, CV and max aircraft). Jap CVL usually operate ~20 fighters and ~10 bombers

Thanks for your help Denniss.
If I understand what your saying correctly it wouldn't help to load my CVs/CVLs with alot of one type of aircraft as only a limited number would fly.
It has occured to me to load my carriers with a larger than usual number of zeros in order to have a large defensive advantage during the intial engagements, and then later to transfer more bombers to the carriers once the enemy carriers have lost most of their aircraft and are now vulnerable to attack.
Yes I realize this is a gamble as my carriers would have to survive the initial attacks. Has anyone tried this tactic?
