I just got the game and there are a few things I don't understand. I have been playing Japan and in the production phase after a few turns, I always have negative population points. Why is this?

You have more units finishing production that turn, than your population can handle. You need to put an item or 2 that is being finished this turn on hold, and you will see your population points go back towards positive.

Right click on items in the top left production box to place that unit on hold. The number under the unit will turn red once it is on hold. You can put items in other production boxes on hold also, but it wont help your population problem, only those in the top left are being finished and placed on the map this turn. Only putting those on hold will reduce a negative population problem

the key is to build supplies.
