Unit Experience/infantry Use

Ok, in Campaigns, units gain experience. WHat is that experience dependant on? Does it matter how many kills it get or does it just matter if they are in combat? Also, if i have a well trained crew that loses 3 of it's 4 men, will thier exprience go down after they are fixed?

How do you use infantry(all kinds, Rifle,MG,AT, ext.)? I have never found a good use for them. They move slow, can't do anything against tanks except in ambushes and assults, and they get killed way easily by tank MG's and Flam throwers. They get supressed easily and retreat open. To me they're almost useless, any suggestions on how to use them effectively?

Can't answer the campaign questions since I have never played a campaign since SP1 days.

Decent quality infantry can put up a tough fight against armor. My favorite thing in the entire game is taking out Tigers with Soviet infantry. Takes some patience and one must consider the terrain, visibility, etc but I'll take a platoon of crack infantry over a Tiger any day. ;-) Try a night battle at first. AI controlled armor will be eaten alive by human-controlled infantry. Good place to begin. Later, take on a human's armored force to hone your technique.

Saw a previous post about this: Paul Vebber said units gain experience 'every time they fire'. Number of 'kills' doesn't matter...if one unit takes out 9 members of a squad they'll get alot more experience points than the other unit that picks off the last guy (though they do get the fancy tank icon!).
