First thought - Rangers or Airborne

Gentleman to the left has some curious head gear and chest pack, joint allied operation? He is carring an M1 carbine and is reloading a clip, I like the finger he using.

Both at top of picture are wearing spats

Not sure what gentleman at the bottom of the picture is, field radio operator? Could be a Navy beach master.

Isn't that a WWII-era Ranger tab on the shoulder of the guy to the right?

Possibly a group from a signals unit - carrying the light M1 carbine rather than the Garand. The guy flipping the bird is a nice touch. [;)]

Rangers make me think of Pointe du Hoc, where they tried to knock out the artillery battery that wasn't there...

Is it U.S. Rangers in action around Monte Cassino?

The Rangers weren't at Cassino.

I believe it was the 2nd Ranger Battalion that cleared the pass leading to Monte Cassino.

The 1st, 3rd and 4th Ranger Bn's fought in Italy, landing in Anzio under Col. Darby's 6615th Ranger Regiment. The 2nd Ranger Bn's first action was D-Day.

I think it has to be on June 6 (crazy as that sounds). The guy with the M1 Carbine, flipping off the magazine [:D] has on the flotation device used by troops assaulting. If it is a day or two after the initial assault, I can't see why he'd be wearing it.

My guess, it is a unit of the 2nd Rangers at Point Du Hoc, after the beach was secured, midday on June 6, 1944.

Those guys look awfully relaxed for June 6th, secured beach or not...

I was about to correct myself, 1st, 3rd & 4th Ranger Battalions. These Bns or units from them cleared the pass leading to Monte Cassino

I've done some research, and cleared up my misunderstanding here. The Rangers did not take part in any of what are considered the four battles of Cassino, the first of which began with the attempted crossings of the Garigliano and Rapido rivers in the second half of January, 1944.

They DID, however, fight in the battles prior to that, helping to push the Germans out of the areas south of Cassino. In that sense, RBWhite is completely correct. By the time the first battle of Cassino began, the Rangers had been withdrawn to prepare for the Anzio landings as part of US VI Corps.

The transcripts I was reading were from the XO of the 2nd Bn.
He was either a boozer or completly shell shocked. The later I'm sure or both.
