In a post 1.1 release game I was at war with Russia and firmly esconsed in her capitol. I was expecting surrender any moment.

I had just dumped Naples as a protectorate. It had produced so many soliders that I couldn't afford to keep them, and didn't have the heart to starve them. I was running at 70% readiness and the 400,000 of them were costing me dearly. I already had 5 Prussian Armies with 12 total corps in service.

Turkey had joined me in Moscow with about 200K troops. My own force numbered 65K.

Suddenly Russia attacked with 400K men. I'd chosen detailed battle since I didn't want to lose. Unfortunately, I was only represented in the battle by two artillery batteries. The Turks did the rest. Fortunately we held in that battle.

On the next turn I looked at the new Russian army, thinking that the AI had outfoxed me by building this army south of Kiev where FOW kept me blind. Then...I saw the Neapolitan flag. I scrolled the screen over, and sure enough, Naples had gone green striped with nary a soldier idling around.

So, in 1 turn, the Russkies got Naples as a protectorate and teleported all 400K of those troops to Moscow to do battle.

I grew up in an era where the Red menace was feared. But not even Brezhnev and the technology of the day could move 400k men that quickly. I just don't think that's right.

When you liberated Naples, where were the Napalese forces? AFAIK, when you liberate someone, their forces don't move (ie. no teleport at all).

BTW - your rationale for dumping Naples doesn't quite make sense to me - protectorates pay the upkeep for their forces, so the only drain on you was reinforcements and supply (if you were feeding them).

In the beta of 1.2 I am testing there is a button to disband divisions... Cool!

Was it the case that Naples had all 400K of the troops? A stack of enemy forces is represented by a single flag -- I've been meaning to change the code so that the flag represents the largest component nation, but at present the flag simply represents the "first" unit in the stack (and "first" here is a euphemism for "arbitrary.") Anyway I was just curious as to whether Naples had managed to field 400K men...

Hi Eric
well, I have seen something of the same, I Freed Poland from some one else, and then got asked to be there protector, they had over 500,000 troops, the troops in the armies stayed in place, think a lot of troops in Garrison stayed in place, but I got a ton of Mil in Paris the next turn, and the turn after and after

I have never seen Naples grow like that, but Venento will !!!!!!, they will in a very short time, match most of the major nations

Hmmm....that's unfortunate. In our beta testing before release the minor countries were building far too few units (probably closer to historical levels those few units, but it was a stinker for game play.) Maybe I should put a cap on their regional bonus troops. Suggestions?

When Naples asked me to become their protector, they had some 10-15 divisions if I recall. After a few months, I had to give them a depot because they were starving, and I wanted to use them for some Italian expansion at a later time. I sent an army and corps with some depleted militia to keep them from disappearing after they left my territory.

To my amazement, they kept growing bigger and bigger. So, I dumped them.

Saxony too, once they became my protectorate had to be fed...or starve. That was okay, they were next door and kept me from spending money and steel building cavalry.

Protectorates should have a cap. Saxony could never afford to field much more than some 30k men. Bavaria, with it's population of 3 million could only manage to afford some a few divisions at any given time. I don't think the Neopolitan contingents in Nappy's service were very large, either. And Nappy wasn't prone to offer to pay for his Allies' troops.

Oops, forgot to answer your question about the location of the Neopolitan troops. The Lion's share of them were sitting in Naples. EVery few turns, it seemed a few divisons would morph their way into Brandenburg, my capitol.
