I've recently noticed that a number of my AI opponents are upgrading to both. How does this work in detailed battle? Are they receiving the added firepower plus the ability for opportunity charges? Does one upgrade cancel the other out? And wher does this leave the column fighting upgrade?

ahhh, that is a interesting question, and one that is very HARD to figure out

as you get the good die roll, vs the great die roll, vs the lousy die roll

I know the Opp Charge can work wonders, and it can also hurt you (had a Line fromation fire on a disordered Cav Div in front of them, and then charge and diplace them, which meant that I crushed them pretty good, but my troops moved into there hex and were also now displaced, and then 2 Cav Divs were able to counter charge them, thereby all but destroying the unit, losing some 8000 men, besides the large hole it opened in my line !)

(if you not seen some of my posts in the War room, Cav can be very deadly now, to formed and or unformed units)

So, if I get this right and I've upgraded to both double-line and order-mixte, I get a huge firepower bonus and a movement penalty and the ability to make an opportunity charge?

I would say so, I use the double line and I get the Opp Charges with my Inf

(I kind of wish we had a few more unit icons, so when you get some of the upgrades, the formations you form would change, you have what ends up being the assult Column upgrade, the column should look different, a double line formation, should be thicker or, (should I say it) a double line)

You know....that is just the kind of reckless, radical thinking that can get you shot in some countries.

I just think that one is the antithesis of the other. I like hard_sarge's idea of different icons, but if a force of 10K men has some columns deep enough to support a charge in the French manner, how can you justify giving them the firepower of 10K men in two lines? Jus' don' make sense, Forrest.

T'would be neat if you could make it (mixed order) a fourth formation...would look like a "T", yeah?...with the same problems of acheiving as any formation change.

Tis just wishful thinkin heah...I ain't complaining.

I believe I have been less than clear.

Double Line adds 33% to damage = (x1.33)
Mixed Order subtracts 25% from damage = (x.75).

The net effect of having both these upgrades can be computed by multiplying these bonuses, to wit:

1.33 x .75 = .9975.

That is, they almost perfectly cancel each other out. Having 10,000 men in a Double Line gives 1.33 multiplier to damage, whereas having 10,000 men in Mixed Order with a Double Line actually decreases damage slightly.
