Expansion via revolt?

The other day I was flipping through my development screens when I discovered that I now owned Smolensk.
I hadn't been to war with the Ivans, and was mightily perplexed. I saved game, and went back through the 9 autosaves....these are a way cool feature BTW!
After much searching, I discovered that I'd earned Smolensk due to a revolt three turns previously. I hadn't tried to foment revolution. Handn't done anything except a few trades with the proto-communists.
I hadn't made war with anybody after the initial war with France in the 1792 scenario.
Is this normal? If so, what kind of conditions does one avoid to keep his country from falling into the hands of a non-enemy?
