How to setup TCP/IP Multiplayer game ?

Hi all!
Sorry if this question don´t belong in this thread but we are two players that want to setup a multiplayer game over tcp/ip and we don´t get it to work. We´re both using Windows XP
This is how we do:
1) Turn off all firewalls (for us Norton Internet Security 2005), one of us have a broadband router but I leave it as is.
2) Start the game "Remote game", I choose to be the host
3) Get to the host screen, waiting for other player
4) Other player selects "Remote game" and chooses TCP/IP over Directplay.
5) Other player enters my IP adress (as told by ipconfig in DOS)
Nothing happens!!!
I get the error in windows stating "dperr_invalidparams" and that´s about it. Even if we allow the program to search it doesn´t find the server.
What are we doing wrong ? Should we connect a session with DirectPlay in dxdiag ? We have done that through TCP/IP (Port 80) and can chat to each other but the session does not show in the game.
I am new to this with multiplayer setup so I don´t know how DirectPlay should be used and configured.
I am grateful for all help on how to set up a TCP/IP game.
Regards,
Karl XII
