When you get upgrades for your units, which ones do you prefer ?

well
I like the ones for Arty, but most times have to go with Inf improvements first

some of the Cav improvements can be nasty

but so saying, would go with massed Arty I and arty range as two of the main ones I look for (arty drivers is a good one, but don't always show up)

the one that cuts down on forageing losses is pretty good too !!!

first Formation Drilling, then Target Practice, then Massed Artillery

then whatever strikes my fancy (usually the Naval ones if playing the French)

I agree. Quality, well-placed artillery is the best.

I kind of hold off on the naval side of things as the French, I plan, on letting my ground forces take out the navies of the world

the first go around or so, say Sweden or Turkey, I don't really want any of there lands, so I force them to get rid of there fleets

Aus and Prussia I am not worried about

Spain and England are the tricky ones, I hope to be friends with Spain, and plan on making friends with England
