Shameless Plug!

I can't resist the opportunity to share this with you.
I am a tremendous fan of the Grand Campaign style scenarios in TOAW. I have enjoyed several, but one of them stands above all the rest (for me at least!) - Mark Steven's Europe Aflame.
WWII utilizing a map similar to 3R, with various additional areas included (the Horn, Ethiopia, etc). This scenario could be shipped as a stand alone package, and would be worth the money all by itself. Being constantly updated and improved for several years, it is the only scenario to feature its own forum on SZO.
(Europe Aflame Forum Link)
Containing a plethora of strategic options (German pre-war builds, Operation Seelowe, Allied invasions of Sweden, Spain, Persia, etc., a German 'Eastern Crusade' option which is made available if the Allies extend the Maginot Line to the sea...) this scenario is a must for people who like to have a little more meat in their wars.
This is no set-piece battle... YOU decide your path into Russia as the Axis - and what you do in Europe up 'til that point. The game is also reactionary. What you do (combined with a little luck) will determine when the Americans will have had enough, and offer Lend Lease, and ultimately, declare war on the Axis powers.
For fans of the 'big ones', or those that like a great degree of strategic flexibility, I can't recommend Europe Aflame enough!
(The scenario itself can be found in the first, stickied thread in the EA forum)

I feel compelled to point out that the reason EA has it's own forum on szo is not that it's the alltime greatest toaw scenario ever made [:D], although it is one of the best ones out there. IT has a forum on szo because it had one before it came to wfhq on one of the designers homepages.

I'm not a huge fan of this type of scenario. The problem is that TOAW simply can't deal (at the present time at least) with something on that scale (by that I mean area not hex size). Most of the problems could be fixed with upgrades to the game such as expanding the number of events and exclusion zones, but I remain skeptical that there will ever be a TOAW scenario of that scope that is very realistic.

I don't think it's area that matters, but rather the complexity of the situation being covered. The obvious problems are production and politics, both of which are rather complicated and couldn't be dealt with completely in TOAW even if you had 10,000 events.

One would need a player for every country and reasonable victory conditions. Otherwise their motivations will be wrong. Belgium committing national suicide to save two French divisions or something.
Europe Aflame's a pretty fun scenario, though (naturally, I prefer my version...). And from what I can tell, the most popular one in existence. Unique amongst scenarios of this size, it has been played dozens of times and the designers have been able to incorporate the data from these into the scenario, meaning that it plays very smoothly for its size.

"been played dozens of times"
You're referring just to me, right?

Lessee... 54 games reported on the WHQ ladder. But what's really impressive is that the average length of these games is 100-120 turns. Compare a scenario like Drang Nach Osten. 13 plays- with an average length of maybe 25 turns.

Well, the ladder results are very misleading. I've reported very few games of EA. Some were dropped by my opponents, and I didn't report them. One game I reported was actually 3 games vs the same opponent, but I told him I wouldn't let another game go by (restart) without getting some ladder results.. I currently have 7 games on the go, and am jaded in my old age, not letting quite so many go by without making it on the WARS listings. Playing 7 EAs presently.

I would like this better if there was an AI opponent ability

Agree completely. TOAW wasn't designed to do this at all. But god bless 'em if they like it... [8|]

Ben - Your post disappeared?
No, TOAW wasn't designed to do this; games like EA push the engine to its limits. Yet with the inclusion of some house rules and a worthy opponent, playing a campaign style game can be very enjoyable indeed.

That's what 1% supply and 33% readiness does for you.

It was just an error when Ben's old account was reactivated. He's still here. [;)]
