In today's episode, France surrendered to Austria despite my best attempts to bring the Kaiserlichs back to Wein. ...1796 scenario.
Quite often I like to play Britain's historical role (doing it as Prussia), which is to be the guardian of the European status quo...with me rising slowly but surely into dominance.
Anyway, France had to cede Anjou and Provence to Austria. I took these from Austria and tried to give them back to France.
1st attempt I offered them by themselves with nothing in it for me. France declined. I thought this was silly.
2nd attempt I offered the two provinces plus $300. Declined.
3rd attempt I offered them the provinces, and thinkning that maybe I'm supposed to demand something in exchange I ask that they liberate Ostfreisland....sorry, Friesland.
4th attempt I offered the 2 provinces plus $1000. Declined yet again.
I noticed in a previoius game in 1.1 that when I forced a country surrendering to me to take back two provinces I'd taken from someone else, it came from the total of points allowed in the surrender.
I'm thinking that for some reason, being made to accept anything is treated as a punishment.
