Seekrieg ( now in Vth release )

The Admiral Trilogy which has Modern ( Harpoon ), WWII ( Command at Sea ) and WWI ( Fear God and Dread Not or is it Nought ? )

Seekrieg is better for pure surface actions ... the AT is bettter for scenarios that involve a mix of operational and tactical and have a broader scope than just surface action ...

I prefer Alnavco's 1:1200 Superior Models for dioramas, but for gaming they take up a lot of space. GHQ's 1:2400 models aren't bad, kinda small so you have ot be careful.

I own(ed) about a dozen GHQ models, and about 5 Alnavco superior models. Also have about 100 GHQ 1:285 scale tanks.

I used to live in Austin Tx for a few months back in 80 or 81 (Im old, I dont remember). We used to do naval miniatures at the U there. I want to say in the student union, but I am not sure (I wasnt a student). I really dont remember what rules we used. I always used Seapower when I was a kid back in the late 60's. Any chance I may have met your there Don?

Be careful with the older ships they were probably made of lead and a no no for kids.[:-]

The best WWII miniatures surface battle set of rules and data was by Integrated Wargames (circa 1982-3) called 'Clear For Action'
If you can lay you hands on a copy - with all three expansion sets of ship data charts - you'll drool over the detail on each and every ship and weapon (I often wished someone would incorporate that in a game like...well...WitP).

But I think it is long out of print.

Larry Bond's Command At Sea is probably the best WWII naval miniatures data and rules system availible today, and can be found here..

As to ships I guess the first choice you have to make is scale.

1/2400 ( or 1/3000 ) being kind of the default.

1/1200 ( or 1/1250 ) being the other default.

1/6000 being the latest rage...

The broadest range ( most different models ) are available in 1/3000 versus 1/2400 .. these run about $5 a piece ( less for DDs and below ) ...

Broader still are the 1/1250s mostly made in central europe, but these suckers are expensive ... $30 to $100+ a piece ... but if you can afford a couple of hundred of these, then this would be the "first class" way to go.


1/6000 are the new guys ... I haven't played with them myself ... but I've looked at what is available ... so far not as much as 1/3000 or 1/1250 .. but if the popularity continues, the lines will broaden.

If I was just going to play a few WITP surface actions - I might try to see if I could squeeze my wants into a 1/1250 solution ( 2 BB, 4 CA/CL and 8 DD for IJN and about same for USN as an example of a small but useful collection ) .. but if you want carriers and merchant ships and PT boats and mine layers and on and on and on etc. etc. etc. then I'd go with 1/3000.

You can even find assembled and painted units on eBay. That's where I've gotten mine.

skrewball, you ever play the old Avalon Hill board/floor game about Jutland.........you actually 'sailed' your fleet around on the floor, measured the distance with cardboard rulers marked in yards and cut loose a salvo....[:D] !!!!! My friend and I used to have some knockdown dragouts with just about all the High Seas Fleet and most of the Grand Fleet on the bottom of our 'North Sea'......sometimes a dog 'hurricane' would prematurely end the battle [;)] !

Hey Captskillet, I still own my original copy of AH Jutland (and in near mint condition too) from 1967.

It was the game that got me started on wargamming... as a matter of fact it also got me started on double checking sources for game stats! Some things never change![:D]

No, I didn't really play any naval AH games. My friends we all fans of the Air and Land War in Europe. So anytime I bought a pacific or naval game they never wanted to play with me Thanks guys for all the links.
