Quick question: when attacking a frozen area, do you get the surprise bonus only in the 1st area attacked, or in all attacks in all frozen areas during the turn where you "break neutrality"?

Only the very first attack gets the surprise bonus.

Hmmmmm,

22 June 1941

I thought the Germans advanced everywhere from the Ukraine to the Baltic States? On day one.

Guess I want to do the attack with lowest odds first.

I suspect it was tested, because if I recall a really old thread where this was brought up it was a bit too much to have everything surprised. besides that it was debated that the turn length is 3 months and they can't be surprised for more than a few days (or a week at the most).

I can imagine some really devasting attacks if everything in that turn was surprised. as it is right now germany can attack deep inside russia to leningrad, krakhow and belorussia. making these attacks surprise also just makes it extremely easy for the germans then.

I guess,

However I can see ruling out the exploitation attacks but would it be bad having just the border areas easier?

At least now I know a bit more of whats going on. [:D]

I always just seem to be too late starting and there are too many soviets and their grunts too tough for my bombers.

I find that when attacking the soviets really late your planes are best used for attacking infrastructure and artillery. trying to kill infantry is rather futile with planes IMO, since they usually tech up their evasion. therefore its better to go for the sure hits of infarastructure and artillery with their low evasion.

attacking infantry and tanks is best with artillery, since they get a range 2 shot in, which can damage them making their return fire less likely to hit. of course if they have artillery, it'll turn into an artillery duel, but that why you use your planes to take them out before.
