Suggested P-38 Changes

Here is quick list of proposed CHS changes for the P-38. I’ll post my work sheet up later this week

1) Delete 48th and 49th P-38F fighter squadrons from the game. These two P-38E squadrons didn’t historically fight in the PTO, nor even defend the West Coast but for a couple months in 1942. It is too tempting to transfer them to theater..

2) Change the P-38F production dates and numbers. Push back 12/41 date to mid 1942 and increase production. Also push back P-38G production dates and increase production.

Historical P-38 production numbers and arrivals in the PTO are complicated. First there was a flush of P-38Fs coming in the last half of 1942 enough to fill out several squadrons changing over from P-39s and P-40s in theater. But then the first three months in 1943 this was cut down to 15 a month for the SWPAC if not that number for the whole theater as the push on North Africa began.

Understand that squadrons come into the game with planes already given and then fill out their max number by drawing from the aircraft pool. Historical P-38 squadrons in 1942 were change over squadrons…so they don’t come with these game freebees in place.

3) Change the arrival location of the 475th FG from US to Brisbane, Australia. This Fighter Group was hand picked and formed in theater by General Kenney. In game this is represented with the 431st 432nd and 433rd FSs.

4) Increase climb rates. These numbers are without military power. Top speed 38G is 400. +9

actually I fail to understand why the L model is not in the game? Half of the P-38's produced were the L. I say get rid of the F and give me my late war L's instead.

I cannot answer for the design reason for leaving it out. Perhaps a limit on aircraft slots?

I'm open to doing a L version. However, if I had to choose, because of slots, I'd rather have an early F in the inventory because of its impact on the game and history. Those early P-38s in 1942 made a huge impact...and most of the aces scored most of their kills in them.

Anyone know for sure what is the limit on aircraft slots? I'd be happy to work up a 38L also.

The P-38L did indeed see Pacific service. almost 4000 were made from June 44 to the end of the war. Without even digging to hard the 44th FS, 18th FG, 13th AF was equipped with them.

The P-38 made an impact regardless of when/where it was. I would look at changing one of the F5 recon birds to the L if you need a slot.

What draws you to the 38L other than the obvious production figures?

Most pilots in the PTO did not rave over the L series as its improvements were targeted for the high alt fights in the ETO.

Well the glib answer is that I am a big fan of the P-38. In my humble opinion it was the best all around fighter the Allies had in the Pacific. If the L series served in the Pacific then it has a equal right to be represented in the game.

I'd rather see that they get rid of things like Lysander in CHS and bring in combat planes..[:D]. But if there is enough plane slots... And that FR-1 Fireball has to go !! (Sorry Ron!! [:D] )

Here is a detailed discussion on the -30 engine that Carolo is documenting. Carlo got his information from inside Lockheed...but it isn't very public...so most flight sims, and strat games, pass over it.

Most references will put the P-38L at the same numbers as the P38J...in fact it is often said the P-38J-25-LO was the pinicle of the Lightening series since it was the fastest. The L was heavier.

However, there is good documentation that the Allison V-1710F-30 could get 1700 HP instead of the 1600 WEP most list. The charts from C. C. Jordan's web site above, Carlo's in-depth article, are the dash 30 engine.

You could do a late war P-38L with better fuel and the dash thirty engine. I believe it was done in IL-2's flight sim.

What do you think about that?

Hey, one can always change the CHS "unofficially". I like new planes like the Fireball. Makes sense to have in a game that goes into mid '46. To me the plane which is really redundant is that pathetic Fokker recon job the Dutch have. Considering all those squadrons were eliminated for the duration of the war after the DEI collapsed makes its removal all the more sensible. Fill out the squadrons with the better recon model they have.

And really, why is there only 1 variant of the SBD, arguably one of the most important aircraft of the Pacific War? Are the differences so miniscule between variants?

Works for me. Add a 4000 lbs bomb load and it is ready to roll.

Well, I like the Fireball too, actually ![:D] Had never even heard of it before CHS, though [8D]. P-80 might be also a good addition for 1946.
