OK, so which one do you mass produce for the IJAAF? Why?

How well do they perform versus other allied fighters (August 1942 - June 1943)

Please tell me your opinions....

Cheers
Dan

In stock Tony has more firepower and is a clear choice.

In CHS firepower is equal and Tojo seems slightly better against fighters - so not quite as clear a choice there.

So in stock, if Tojo factory capacity exists, I would build Tojos before spending the conversion costs over to Tony's, but otherwise new factory capacity I would put towards Tony's.

Anecdotal evidence: I just had an air battle in which 29 P-40Bs took on 6 Tojo's (5:1). The Tojo's didn't score well. I shot down 4 Tojo's to my 1 P-40B loss.

With PDU on, there can be no debate: Tojo. End of story. Why? Tojo factories convert for free and with no damage to Franks when the Frank is available. Also the engines. Tony uses Kawasaki engines (the only aircraft in the game to do so). So you have to convert engine factories to Kawas and then from Kawas after you are done. This takes time and supply. The Tony is a marginally better airplane, but economically the Tojo is by far the wiser choice.

Now, with PDU off you have to build about equal numbers of both. You have no choice as to which groups convert to them.

My impression is Tony's are a better fighter and Tojos have shorter range and are more suited to intercept bombers.

I have no experience with either tho, its just what i've read.

I had planned on using the tojos for defense agianst bombing and the tony's for most everything else.

In my game vs. Hoepner I really am not enjoying the Tony's.
IMHO they are the best ones vs. 4E Allied bombers.
And the Japs really need to stop them [;)]

Tonies are better vs the 4Es, while the Tojos perform better against enemy fighters. While both of them are useless for LRCAP, even at little distances ( 2/3 hexes). Use Zeros for LRCAP and escorts and the first two for CAP with 0 range. Tojos do a fairly good job at high altitudes, while the tonies are deadly below 15k ft.

Just my 2 cents

Well, use both, 50/50. And mix them in every base you can. Both have good and bad points and neither should be used 100% excluding the other.

The tojo factories autoconver to franks, and you want to upgrade everything you can to franks when they arrive. The tony does marginally better vs bombers, which are your main threat in 43, while Tojos can do ok vs escorting fighters, especially P-38's and anything weaker. They both can take on corsairs achieving 1:3 or even 1:2 kill ratios vs corsairs (in corsairs favor ofcourse) if they have good exp and corsairs have average exp. If you concentrate enough the corsair squadron should be more or less wiped out with just a few pilots surviving.

Use both in equal numbers, it should give you much more flexibility in terms of losses also. If one type suffers more and the pool tends to dry up then up the use of the other type on the front while placing the one that suffered losses into reserves for a while. And so on.

Which is pretty much the opposite of how they were used in the real war.... with Ki 61 as an air superiority fighter and Ki 44 as a bomber interceptor.
