I have downloaded all of the patches for starshatter, but now when I say to play the game it just brings up a box that has the classic windows "could not open" thing.

I also have an ATI Radeon chip and on the Starshatter website it says that there have been some problems with those....[&:]

You mean you have downloaded and installed the 4.5.0 patch? I take it that you're not using catalyst 4.2 drivers?
Your problem doesn't sound the same as mentioned on starshatter.com. You mean the kind of "could not open" dialog you get when you try to open filetype not associated to any program? Or the kind that means there is error running the file? You could post a picture of the dialog.

Well i cant really figure out how to get a picture on here. But its the microsoft alert that says " Stars.exe has encountered a problem and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It goes on to say if you want to send an error report.

Do you know what version your ATI (Catalyst) drivers are?

Also, if you go into your starshatter directory and find the video.cfg file and delete/move it (resetting you to default settings) you can see if that helps.

Sadly, I dont know my driver version is. But when I looked for video.cfg, I couldn't find anything like it. The C:/Matrix Games/Starshatter folder right??

Yep, thats the folder. I guess if the game hasn't been able to start even once the video.cfg might not get generated, if it isn't included in the installer. You could try the video.cfg on the bottom of this page, though its for the demo: Starshatter downloads. Put it in the Starshatter folder. I don't think it helps but try anyway, you never know :)

You can find out your driver version by going in the system properties and from there to device manager, your graphics card properties and file information. For example my nvidia card says c:\windows\system\nvdisp.drv, file version 4.14.10.7772, meaning nvidia 77.72 forceware drivers. Or the info might also be available in your display properties/advanced section.

You could also try upgrading/downgrading your display drivers, uninstall and reinstall the game, and maybe downloading the game or updates again if you didn't order it on cd, might be corrupted, and check viruses and spyware just in case. But i think most likely this is some compatibility problem with drivers.

I'd suggest grabbing the latest ATI Catalyst drivers from www.ati.com. Also google "Driver Cleaner Pro" and download and install that. Uninstall your current drivers via your control panel, reboot, run Driver Cleaner Pro, install the new drivers, reboot. That may help. Another alternative is to google "Omega Drivers", they are an alternate driver set for ATI cards that fix many of the bugs in the official ATI drivers.
