Designed as a suicide weapon with an explosive warhead of up to 1,200kg, the Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka was seen by the Japanese as a method of penetrating the sophisticated fighter screen which the USN deployed around its Task Forces. The rocket engine of the Ohka would accelerate the craft to almost 1,000kph in its final dive which would leave the USN defenders with insufficient time to track and destroy the attacker. The fatal flaw in the scheme was that the modified G4M bombers which carried the Okha needed to get within 28km of their target before dropping the Okha and the USN fighters could easily patrol out to that distance. Despite their terrifying potential the Ohka only sunk one destroyer before the end of the war.

less than 200 air units to go !
