Attention RO-class haters

Recently there were some comments about how useless the RO sub class was to the Japanese along with talk about stopping the production of the RO's. So far in my game against Capt Ed, my I class subs have done very little but I have had a recent success with two RO's.
Mavis recon had detected a build up of ground units at Midway so I suspected a move against Wake Island. In addition to some ground unit reinforcements, I sent 3xRO's to patrol 60-120 miles East of Wake. Sure enough, a little over two weeks later massive amounts of American ships show up at Wake Island. On the way in to bombard Wake, four American BB's run over the RO-62.

RO-class gets some

Hi,
A fine hit!
I personally have found them mostly ineffective. Due to their limited range I employ them mainly in Australian/NC area. Infact I can't think of them every achieving a hit on anything worthwhile.
My I-Boats have been excellent against swift (30+ ships sunk) but not so far against Nik (a new idea for usage is in the making) or Dadman.
Regards,
Steven

RO-62 also got a hit on a AK heading in for the landing beach after its battleship encounter.

Sub attack at 83,63
Japanese Ships
SS RO-62
Allied Ships
AK Steel Ranger, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK Shooting Star
DD O'Brien
DD Hughes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The third RO also had some action but got no hits. But when the day was over, two RO class subs had scored 4 hits with three of them on the Colorado. BANZAI!!! And to top it all off, all three escaped with only minor damage.
To be honest, it is March 1942 in our game and I have stopped production on the RO's that I could stop on the production chart. No, I am not going to immedeately restart construction, but I will restart once I get some radar carrying DD's fast-tracked thru the construction process. Just saying that in the right situation, the RO's have some value!

If not for the three hits on the Colorado, my excitement level would be much much lower. If the hits were on different AK's, oh well, "nice shooting boys, now what are you going to do for me?"
We are playing with IJN sub doc ON, so that could be why my I-Class have done nothing. There has been a couple of TF's with combat ships running over some I-Class but no shots were ever fired maybe because of the many DD's in these TF's?

If the Japanese player can grab some advanced bases and move AS to them, I think the Ro-Class is OK. I like to operate them out of Timor, NW Australia, and Rangoon. If the Japanese can grab Suva, Luganville, or Noumea, those make good staging bases for those subs as well. The short range doesn't hurt near as much and can serve as a limited force multiplier by keeping more SS on station then would normally be there if they were operating from a farther home base.
We all have our complaints about the ASW model within the game so I think ANY hits are better then none!

About the ROw-boats, I kinda like them too. I mean, they're not THAT much worse than the I-boats. What's the use of having a 30,000 mile range if you can't actually hit anything when you get there?

Know what you mean T but for some reason in my games the rows are doing diddly. Where as the eyes do fire and hit stuff

I think the biggest thing I've hit with a ROw-boat was an American heavy cruiser...
